A vidding crossroads

Dec 20, 2008 21:52

Did someone just switch my brain around? Cause I was just reading this article, and it *perfectly* describes the transition I'm going through. You know the one - the transition that might permanently end me as a vidder ( Read more... )

I can understand what you're saying. It's part of why my vid library is so small and hasn't been added to in over a year. I'm sure I've probably watched vids that are more about the feeling than the narrative.

You're not crazy. :o)

Hey, it's all about quality, not quantity. (I hope - says the guy who has done like three vids since '07)

I can guarantee I've never been anywhere near your brain or ever attempted to switch it, but I totally get what you're saying.

I've never been one for narrative, or for making much of a point, though I've tried because that's what I thought I was supposed to be doing. I totally agree on conveying a feeling or a mood, and I would love to see more vids like that. Like painting a moving picture, rather than telling a structured story. That's how I vid in my head, as well. I want to capture the emotion, not necessarily make a point. Vidding convention tells me that I'm not as good for wanting to vid that way, but I disagree. You have to do what moves you, and it's no less valid as a visual brain fart than as a cohesive narrative.

Go forth and paint, Brad. If you don't do what's true to you, then you'll just sabotage yourself, IMO.

I still want to have and make a point, just with a much different visual "language." It's just so hard to trust my instincts... how my brain is telling me to approach that. I guess the bottom line is for each of us to be true to ourselves.

Oh, absolutely. I do, too. But I don't necessarily want to tell a story. Looking back on my old vids - variously they said things like "Wes is a dork" or "Buffy is jealous of Angel's life in LA" or "Daniel Jackson gets whumped a lot." They didn't go anywhere, just made one observation using a series of supporting images.

I'd be really interested to see you do a vid, just following your heart. I think I would really enjoy it.

"Daniel Jackson gets whumped a lot."
=)

Following your heart is definitely a good thing. Sure beats the alternative.

I like pretty.

Really, I love the idea of vidding a mood or feeling, eliciting a visceral response from the audience. Vid for the right-brained people!

That's *exactly* what I mean - telling a story with moods and emotions and primal connections, rather than direct a direct A + B = C statement. Hope it works. :P

I am now awaiting the next vid of Brad's first instinctual vision - I think you should go ahead and see what happens. I think you'll be suprised by how naturally a narrative will evolve even when you are not consciously forcing a structured sequence onto a vid. And if it means you keep vidding then I am all for it. :-)

Oh it definitely won't be like flipping a switch. It'll be a process. The next vid will likely be some odd mish-mash of styles.

I really hope you're right. That sounds like exactly what I'm shooting for.

I think you worry too much about what you think you're supposed to do or what you think people expect from you. You should just follow your instinct and try to please yourself.

I just don't want to let anyone down, you know? I appreciate it. I really needed to hear that.
