I'm excited to be a part of
bananainpyjamas' wonderful
Friendly Neighborhood Vidding Awards, where I've become a co-judge starting with the current award round. I'd love to see more of everyone's work, so go submit now. The current round ends March 18, and every fandom is accepted. And the awards are preeeeettty.
See more about the site and submission guidelines
here.
Judging duties aside, I've been on a downloading spree lately trying to catch up with all the vids I missed while working on my newest one. Some absolutely stunning, powerful vids have been posted in the last month or two. Most have been out and recced so long that it seems pointless to even mention them, but definitely check out
laurashapiro's Doctor Who vid,
The Lonely People if you haven't. It killed me just a little.
Also digging on recent *brilliant* work from
bananainpyjamas (
Through Glass),
obsessive24 (
Blindfold),
kiki_miserychic (
God's Gonna Cut You Down),
mranderson71 (
No Man's Land),
dualbunny (
They Can't Take That Away From Me), and
charmax (
Mainstream), among others.
The latter contains some of the most gorgeous crossfades I've ever seen, and I've been thinking a lot lately about why they work so well and how I can rip that technique off and take credit for it in the future. It's so easy to screw up crossfades and make them look jarring, but so far I've been able to identify three ways to combat that:
-Continued directional external movement. Particularly at the same speed.
-Rapid-fire back and forth between static/detail shots and extreme movement/action. This is part of what seems to make
charmax's crossfades work so incredibly well.
-Crossfading to black space. When a scene starts with a fade in or external movement out from an behind obstruction - that slowly reveals the scene - it seems to invite a crossfade.
Still thinking about this a lot. Always dangerous.
Now it's on to House season 2, which has been sitting on my shelf patiently waiting for me to finish the Faith vid for about two months. Plus the guy who lent it to me has been doing the same thing (except not on my shelf. that would be weird.)
After that, I'm planning to start BSG. A friend at work has S1, and I'm dying to get started on it. It's odd... usually I don't get into a fandom until long after the show has been cancelled.
Then probably Angel - all the way through. Big motivation from
obsessive24's latest vid.
Still undecided about my next vid project. The most likely candidates are:
-Buffy "I Only Have Eyes For You" episodic. I pretty much have this mentally storyboarded, and I would be able to get it done fairly quickly. I guess I'm just not as excited about it as some of my other ideas because I don't think it would be that challenging. Of course, I'm probably wrong. I usually am.
-Lady Jane movie vid. It's a 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company film starring a very young Cary Elwes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Patrick Stewart and directed by the guy who did the musical Les Miserables. How cool is that? :) I'm pretty excited about the narrative concept for the vid, too. I just don't know if anyone would actually want to watch the vid considering the obscurity of the fandom.
-Angel S1 overview. What I have here is a song that I know matches the feel and journey of Angel (both the character and the series), but beyond that the concept needs some more time to stew. This could turn into more of a series-ish overview or character study.
Sounds like Escapade was a great con. Really wish I could have gone!
