VVC vid recs + short report

Aug 16, 2011 10:20

Vividcon had a much different feel this year - one that's beautifully summed up here with, in part: "Old friends paging through the depth and history of this shared experience that will never be the same ... And not forgetting tomorrow, the new faces who bring new memories, new friendships, new connections. Time to have new adventures. Not to ( Read more... )

I can't vouch for your real life stuff and how it affected you, but I can say you are probably not the only person who felt a bit left out as an audience member. A lot of the vids, especially in Premieres, were very fandom specific. The vids would be accessible to people in the fandoms, but the context would be lost on those who were not in said fandom. And I think that is a shame. While fandom specific vids satisfy some audience members, they often do so at the expense of non-fandom viewers. There are vids which do both, of course and these aspects are not mutually exclusive. But there is a balance between them, if that makes any sense.

I totally agree! (As everyone heard me blathering on about in vid review.) There were a lot of vids I sensed were probably quite effective for a fan of the canon but that I didn't really connect with. But having never been before, I have nothing to compare this year's Premieres show to.

I don't think it's a bad thing to make fandom-specific/context heavy vids either. For instance, I thought Barkley's Friday Night Lights vid was well placed and was especially poignant to fans of the show. I didn't feel the same, but I wasn't the target audience for that vid either.

Exactly, and it was a really terrific vid - I mean, even as someone who doesn't watch the show, we could tell that. That's a *good thing!* I want to make it clear that I don't blame anyone for my detachment from the content, except myself and the fact that I simply haven't gotten into many fandoms. Especially lately. That's not the vidder's fault.

FWIW, I totally get that feeling of disconnect you experienced, because the last time I went to VVC, that was how I felt. Very few vids excited me (which is kind of normal for me, because I'm not easily impressed *g*). It didn't help to have a vid that meant a lot to me dismissed as "old-skool" in a snide, eye-rolling way (btw, I'd like to eradicate that term entirely and replace it with "classic"). It was much more about connecting with friends on a personal level than actual vids.

My lingering feelings about that last VVC are a big part of why I haven't vidded at all the past few years. :P

That's fascinating to me because the more history-oriented shows were one of my favorite things at VVC this year (as a new vidder and a first-time attendee). There was a blurry Remington Steele vid shown that I adored even though time and the transition from video tape to con copy had really, really not been kind to it. I often hear 'oldschool' used to mean: "Classic, and don't you forget it, punk!" :D

I'm glad you enjoyed those vids. I'm into the history of pretty much everything that interests me, but not everyone is. At the time, the vid review mods intended "old skool" as a compliment, but a bunch of (young -- sorry!) people around me reacted very negatively. There was some other deeply unpleasant (to me) stuff happening at the time, too.

I'm sorry to hear that, klia. :( It was wrong of people to make you feel that way.

I'm all for lots of different aesthetics and fandoms. If they don't sync with mine, they just... don't. It's not something where I feel like someone is to blame. Vidders will vid what they vid, and audiences will get what they want. I'm fine with all of that - heck, I encourage it! :)

I think the disconnect I felt with the audience was only so pronounced this year because I felt such a strong bond with everyone outside of programming/fandom interests.

It was so awesome meeting you this weekend! You were one of the few that escaped here's luck's plans of introducing me to everyone, but then you went all awesome and introduced yourself! I'm excited to talk more next year.
