Comparing DNS results from sites that can reach the target name, which is load-balanced, with results from hosts that can't is about all you can do for blackbox testing of an outtage like this. I don't quite understand why you think you're being funny, but you're not.

That was happening to me during the l3/verio crash a couple days ago... but there doesn't seem to be anything going on now. I can reach google at www.l.google.com 64.233.161.147
