Chapter Twelve

How fast Miles’s pangalactic bombshell seemed to go off depended, Helen later decided, on who you were and what else you were trying to do at the time.

Lots of families here. Alys had a lot of fun with Ivan there, it has to be said, and one can see what a terror she must have been as a girl. The little family camping trip, by contrast, is just beautiful. You do so well at actually showing us Miles' talents for people-management, with his careful unfolding of the story about his grandfather (and the bits about Bothari and Pym were perfect touches), and then turning it into Nikki and Tien's story. Lovely.

I was going to stop and go to sleep a chapter ago, but...

I was actually guffawing through the scene where Alys told Ivan. My downstairs neighbors were probably wondering why I had to howl with laughter. Oh, cruel, cruel, cruel Alys... but I totally understand the temptation. And that last line about a Cetagandan marriage! HA!

Delighted to amuse. The friends who read this before I posted it didn't seem to get much of the humour, so I really am pleased you do.

Poor Ivan. I feel rather guilty about so trepanning the man, but as I said in reply to Philomytha somewhere, he was annoying to me, esp. in *ACC*, and I rather took out the small change here. And while he remains very grumpy he does get to have an interesting though only summarily reported time on Eta Ceta ...

Hi there, newjerseybadger, always good to learn of a new reader. In case you were really asking, no accents needed in German, and in this case no diacritical marks ; in Spanish it'd be schAden-frOYde (can't find how to do special characters in a reply, but it'd be the usual acute over the 'a' and somewhere over the 'eu'). And that's how I was feeling at the time, for sure, though as it happens I've just made it up to Ivan, middlin' spectacularly, in the rhird of this novel's four tail-pieces, The Two Ivans.

I like your animated icon, btw, and all comments are very welcome as you proceed in my odd experiment. Enjoy!

I'm enjoying this whole story so much, almost as much as Lois's work. And since the only fault I find with her is that she JUST DOEN"T WRITE FAST ENOUGH!!!!, it's nice to have something to feed my addiction in between. Very impressive, thank you!

Hi, bethwaltn, and welcome to 'The Peaceful Vorkosiverse'. Delighted you're enjoying the novel, and all comments are very welcome. (And only three or four months more to wait for the e-ARC of Cryoburn ... sigh.)

Yup! As various people said, I did give poor Ivan rather short (if not quite undeserved) shrift, but I tried to make up for it in the tail-piece called The Two Ivans.
