*cackling evilly*

Gregor slapped a privacy seal on Miles' drunken ravings? Brilliant! Looking forward to this.

*chuckles*

OK, what are the decorations you've listed then? I can take a stab at VGC (Very Good Conduct), which was probably a Dendarii award, but the rest?

Hi, rogerstening,

Wow, it's been a while, but ...

Imperial Gold Star (and bars)
Vorbarra Cross (and bar)
Hegen Hub Cross
Xav Cross (and bar)
Order of Merit (Cetaganda)
Military Medal (but I can't remember why it's in this order)
Vervani Grand Cross
Grand Cross of Marilac
Pol Cross
Grand Knight of Aslund

Pure make-up, but I was thinking of the 'just-short-of-loony' look of Miles's medals when he wears them all in ACC, and of the pleasure he might take in using his alphabet soup when the opportunity presents. Plus it's the sort of thing Helen would be punctilious about in print ...

Of course it's Memory. Duh. Ever since I finished doing the Reader's Companion to ACC earlier this year I've found myself substituting ACC for almost every other Bujold title I mean to write.

There's also a reference IIRC to a medal 'drifting in' from Marilac.

The echo of the Victoria Cross was intentional, and certainly meant no disrespect. I've seen the hugely impressive room commemorating ANZAC winners of the VC (in the Canberra War Museum), and would that we did as much in the UK. (Australian inclusion of Ataturk's face in a Gallipoli memorial there, and their negotiations with the Turks about memorialisation, underlie what Ekaterin does with the Occupation Memorial in Forward Momentum, btw.) Some work I did way back on Anglo-Indian materials, esp. in re: 1942-7, also brought to my attention many of the VC citations for Gurkha and IA troops; also hugely impressive. But I don't think the initials can be reserved from fiction on those grounds (and they mean something quite else to US vets, of course ( ... )
