I feel very sad for most people, and especially for Hufflepuffs as all my friends embody the Hufflepuffy goodness we've all come to know and love. I myself, am...well I'm probably a Squib but I could apply over at hogwarts_elite and be pretentious and FIND OUT what I am. except no I won't do that.
In general, I would wager that most people don't know how to convey evil as a smouldering, inner ember kind of thing. I think that's actually a lot of what Slytherin has going on, like maybe they are not all "bad and snark-tastic" so much as, they've got this whole...vibe about them that just doesn't sit well and everyone who is like "OMG YOU KNOW WHAT IS THE SAME AS BEING A FUTURE DEATH EATER? BEING AN ASSHOLE. YES IT IS THE SAME. HUFFLEPUFFS SUCK, SLYTHERINS RULE!" just doesn't really understand the whole dynamic of the house, I don't think. As I'm fairly sure, I mean, while there are many that will genuinely probably grow up to be bastards, there's no way that ALL of them will so a friendly, or at least TOLERABLE slytherin on occasion is nice. I mean, dude, I don't think Pansy really has beef with Lavender, or Susan Bones or really anyone unless you insult Draco or her frills. (ahahaha or Draco's frills, whatever.)
STILL THOUGH THEY SUCK AND YOU RULE AND THE GAME IS OVER.

AND I HAD ANOTHER THOUGHT:
you know, you could easily make the argument that while such people are unpleasant, they have to be at least passingly acceptable to get past, and I'm going out on a limb here, but let's assume that Cornelius Fudge, while an ass, is genuinely thinking of himself as a good guy. He THINKS he does the right things and is threatened by Dumbledore and all of this, I mean, he's not trying to hurt anyone. And while I can't prove it, I get a general vibe from him that says "I was probably a Hufflepuff and not a good one." I mean, brave? no. Smart? hells no. Evil? Well I guess that is to be decided, but I don't think so. Does it make the Hufflepuff name look bad? Well yes, but still go with.
And see, Cornelius Fudge is all "Oh yes, Lucius Malfoy I would love to talk politics with you in my private office where you can bribe me with lots of gold coins and your female virgins." because Lucius, Lucius man he KNOWS how to work the system. Even if Fudge IS evil and WAS a Slytherin, a lot of people the Lucius has wrapped around his finger (and NOT by threatening them) AREN'T slytherin alumni, they are regular folks. Lucius is, while we haven't seen it, charming and slippery, weaving his way around society and into its good graces and while he is a total asshole, I think he says a lot about what we overlook playing slytherins, which is that they are not assholes UNIVERSALLY. We don't see Lucius with Narcissa and his son, we don't see him talking to Joe Bob on the street and we don't see him buying a drink at his favourite pub. We see him as Harry sees him, AWFUL, but somehow he got a lot of societal power (probably with money, of course) and respect, and he doesn't just throw it around. He sits and waits and plots, biding his time and being actually very conniving and probably convincing as a man who appears to have learned his lesson.
AND SNAPE. we can make a case for Snape, who we KNOW to have been a Slytherin, but who we only see through Harry's eyes and still Dumbledore goes "hey hey hey, guys, Snape is cool." and he's in the fucking order, and while yes...he may be an exception to the rule at the same time such exceptions EXIST as proof that not everyone who comes out of Slytherin is a big asshole. To Harry, well probably yes they are, but to an objective observer, I would say no, no they aren't.

You make some of the seriously BEST arguments to this point that I've ever read. Wow, I don't even know how to respond at the moment, because all I'd be saying is, "OMG I SO AGREE" with every single point. :D
