In late 2002, shortly after the demise of Ansett, Qantas retired their last Boeing 747-200 series jet, having made way fully for the -300 and newer -400 series version of the 747. The old girl was destined, like her sisters retired before her, for the scrapyard in Arizona USA when someone came up with the idea to donate it to the Qantas museum. ( Read more... )

Thanks mate. Yeah I havent gone to see her yet, but the photos do her justice. You can go on tours inside, sit in the cockpit, climb into the cargo holds, under floor galleys and wheel wells, it definitely makes for a good tour. Unfortunately Longreach (as the name implies), is a long way from anywhere really, right in the middle of the Queensland outback. Some day I'll go visit, especially as they've just sent a second jet there, their very first Boeing 707, found in the UK awaiting scrap at south-end. Was restored and flown back to AUS only late last year.

Yes I saw them rebuilding and flying it back on youtube. Very interesting. It is great that QF make such an effort to preserve their heritage.
