Job update: I stuck the landing on my job 'dyno,' and just started my new job. But that's not what this post is about.
I was working on my online class this morning. I had made a mistake on the quiz I wrote over the weekend that I just caught this morning. It was quite stupid and embarrassing, and I was writing an announcement to that effect. I was annoyed that I had done something so dumb.
Into my office walks one of the students in my class. She had made an appointment with me to talk about getting an extension on her classwork for medical reasons. I had asked for some supporting documentation. So she comes in and directs me to the Alachua County Clerk of the Court website. It turns out that her husband had been arraigned several times for domestic battery, stalking, etc. At this point, she starts crying, explaining that there are injunctions against him, but he ignores them and threatens her, threatens suicide, accuses her of cheating, harasses her friends, etc. Since my student is from Nepal and not a US citizen, it is difficult for her to leave. Also, there are kids involved (sent to parents in Nepal, apparently).
Needless to say, this is not my area of expertise. I did my best and told her to go to her husband's probation officer and the State Attorney's office. She had already been to Peaceful Paths and another shelter, but I recommended she go back. I tried to explain that her husband obviously had some kind of mental disorder, but I don't know if that got through to her. She cried a little longer and then she left.
After that, I went back to writing the announcement about the mistake I made.
