Christmas Cookies 2009

For the last few days I've been buried in the process of making Christmas Cookies, most of which are in prep to be nestled on top of iced cupcakes for the husband's office.

I used Alton Brown's sugar cookie recipe. It's available on foodtv.com. I lined by baking sheets with parchment paper and they all came out fantastically. I used mainly my 1.5" snowflake cutters, with a few larger 3" and 3.5" ones.

I made a lot of them. A LOT.

Then I mixed up the glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon light corn syrup, a dash of vanilla extract, and water to thin to desired consistency. You can use milk but the glaze will be more matte than shiny. Food coloring was added for half to make blue.

Then I brushed the cookies with the glaze. Mmmm glaze...

Did I mention I did a lot?

No A LOT. This isn't even half.

I let them dry overnight and then today I made some Wilton Royal Icing and grabbed my Disney Princess sprinkles. I bought them just for the tiny little sugar pearls. One of these days when I make Royal Icing, the motor of my Kitchen Aid is just going to tell me to piss off and quit. It slogs through 7-10 minutes of mixing for this icing. It is yummy with a slightly fruity taste, and it dries hard so you don't smear your designs and can stack cookies.

I'm working on improving my piping. The tiny white cookies (they're maybe an inch and a half in diameter) were done first.

Then the tiny blue cookies.

Finally the 4 bigger cookies. You can almost watch my piping get better and more steady over time, then get crappy near the end because my hands were tired :D

Hopefully when I tackle the rest of them tomorrow, they'll look even better!
