Hello, all...I'm new to the whole BPAL thang, although I first heard about them ages ago when Bust magazine did a blurb on them, and I've been drooling over the site for a while now, but only just now decided to take the plunge and order my first set of imps. I have another set on the way, and all the Halloween stuff sounds sooooo tempting that I'm just about to place another order. ^_^ Well on my way to obsession, it seems...
So! I reviewed my first batch...here's my very untrained nose's opinion of the scents.
Athens: ZOMG MYRRH. And the myrrh smell..._traveled._ After I put this on I started cleaning the kitchen, and the whole kitchen started to smell like myrrh after a couple minutes. So, if I ever want some wise dudes to carry me across the desert and give me to Baby Jesus, I should put this on. It's funny because in the bottle it smells really nice, like fruity wine, and I wish it'd smell like that when it got on my skin, too.
Salome: In the bottle it's really strong at first, but I get rose and almond out of it. Pretty nice, actually...it reminds me of the perfumes I got as hand-me-downs from my grandma...it's sweet and powdery, like the ones she wore. Why do I have the feeling that Grandma Marilou would totally get a kick out of BPAL? (Her bathroom always had TONNES of little bitty perfume vials that she'd get as free samples from the department store, and these got passed down to me also. At least I came about my olfactory fetish honestly through genetics.)
Bewitched: Ooh, fruity. In bottle it smells like freshly juiced green apple, and berries a little too, with some kind of flowery something. The first time I put it on, the floweries came out more in the drydown, but the second time it dried to a kind of light berry and white grape smell. It's not as green/plantlike as I expected, but it's cool.
Tamora: There's something on it in the bottle that's kind of ew. I don't know what, but it's really strong and weird. However, on my skin the "ew" goes away and it makes sandalwood and something else that I figure is amber. I must be the only person who doesn't get peach out of this scent at all, though. The sandalwood probably ate it. But I dig this scent. It's very feminine and delicately strong.
Dana O'Shee: Almond! When it dries on me there's a milky smell that comes out also. It reminds me of marzipan, and almond pastries, and I love it. *hugs Dana O'Shee* This may or may not be a bottle order for me next time around.
Queen Mab: Nice light floral...I'm getting some jasmine and maybe some lily also. It fades really fast, though. It turns to a light musk after a couple minutes.
Pain: This was my first frimp. BWAHAHA. I'm so amused that the lab thought I needed some pain in a bottle. But it's actually one of my favorites so far...in the bottle it's really minty, with some sort of warm scent, something leathery or woodsy. Which is a really nice note to have in there, because when it dries down, that balances the mint really well. It warms up the mint so that it doesn't completely attack you with frosty icy mintiness. It'd be nice on a man, too.
Conclusions? Well, I like sandalwood and amber more than I thought I would, and I lurve almond. Foody scents are always good. Not so keen on musks. Still in search of a leafy green sort of scent (which is what I wanted Bewitched to be) and a wine scent that's more fruity-berrylike than boozy (which is what I wanted Athens to be, before it became Myrrhapalooza). And a good plumeria or night-blooming jasmine would be welcome too. Recommendations for the noob, anyone?
