I went to bed dreaming of a better America. And when I woke up, I found my dream was coming true.
The Democrats have swept the House of Representatives with 26 pickups so far, bringing their total to 228. The Senate is still locked in a brutal contest, with Jim Webb and Jon Tester holding razor-thin leads over two of the worst of the worst, Felix Macaca and Connie Burns. If evidence pans out that the nasty voter suppression calls were connected to Allen, this could get even uglier. I’m not terribly confident that a Justice Department run by Abu Gonzales will be particularly keen to investigate these charges, but they need to be investigated.
South Dakotans took to the polls en masse to smack down a brutal anti-abortion law. I was ready to write this state off, but the hard work and ceaseless confidence of hundreds of activists and voters gave me hope. It’s good to be wrong.
Amazingly enough, Arizona is one of the few states to reject a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. I have to give you credit,
Mike-at least AZ’s “get out of our lives” approach is consistent. Pity Virginia can’t say the same. Amanda has the right of it-this will cause dreadful harm to Virginia’s business and tech community, because who wants to spend the pink dollar in a state that treats you as less than human?
Make no mistake-this is a repudiation of Bush, his policies, and the cabal that supports him. We’ve had one-party rule for six years, and the end result is a country fractured, divided, and under constant threat of losing everything that makes it great. People like Bush, Rove, Cheney and their ilk are good at two things-fear and manipulation. Take those away, and what have you got? Nothing.
This isn’t a complete sweep. It’s not even an ending. But it IS a victory, no matter how much the spin machine and the bleating idiot pundits try to state otherwise.
And you know what else? It’s a good start.
