For those who don't know, today is the Iowa caucus, which will begin the process of deciding who our next President is going to be. If you need a primer as to what a caucus is and how it works, I recommend this
AP article and
this MyDD series outlining the process in gory detail.
Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake has some
early predictions as to who might take the lead on the Dem side. Chris Bowers seems to think that
Obama has the momentum, bolstered by the Kucinich endorsement and a possible glad-hand from Joe Biden and Bill Richardson. (What? Doesn't anyone care what Mike Gravel thinks besides me? :))
Although I'm still an Edwards guy first and foremost, I'm pleased to hear numerous reports that the youth activism and support for Obama is skyrocketing, as this is the most vital group that any President running needs to pay attention to. It's a mark of how rich and well-versed the Dem field is that I could find myself voting for any of the candidates, except Biden, whom I have a long-running grudge against for his support of the credit card industry.
Kos (via the Politico, who I refuse to link to) is crowing over the
potential dropout of "Grampa" Fred Thompson if he does poorly. Y'know, the guy who was supposed to be the second coming of Reagan and singlehandedly deliver a crushing victory for the GOP on a strong "law and order" ticket. *snerk*
I'll be keeping an eye on this throughout the day and providing you Internets as necessary. This is a very, very important time in American politics, and the decisions made in the freezing cold of Iowa today will cement the future of the country.
* = with apologies to both
the revolutionary cadre and
the Wu-Tang Clan.
