NY's run

Jan 01, 2010 22:47

As the wise say, on the first day of the year, you should do the things you would want to do often during the year. So I knew I was to go for a run today!

It didn't happen until well in the afternoon, but it was great. I decided to head to the woods and not the one right by our backyard, but the other end of our tiny town. That's much lovelier as there isn't so much litter thrown away and there's a lovely selection of trees, not only the boring poplars.
The weather has been unseasonably warm for the last couple of days (7 degrees Celsius today) and we even got some rain, so the paths and dirt roads were a bit muddy, but not frozen or slippery at all. Skipping puddles was actually fun :)

I followed the road in the above pic and got to a recently cleared area very similar to the one where I usually do my barefoot strides. Looked like this:

I promptly removed my shoes and ran all the way and back in the deep sandy soil. I managed to step on something hard, but I only noticed the wound at home in the shower :)
The moist soil was wonderful to run in, but also quite hard and a bit cold.

When I got back to where I left my shoes my feet had already started to warm up so I decided to continue my run barefoot. Luckily, some of the paths in this area are basically packed sand with few stones, so I could comfortably run barefoot. The two guys I met at a cottage were first outraged then amused as I jogged past, shoes in hand :D That was totally funny!

I did approximately 6K barefoot, then realized two things:
1. I had no idea where I was
2. It was getting dark

So I quickly put my shoes back on and followed a path West. The sun was setting and I knew I had to go west so it was easy, however, I had done so many turns by then that I was still a bit confused. Luckily, I heard a train in the distance and that was exactly what I needed; I had started out by the railroad! Soon I got to the fishing lakes and from there I was right on track (pun intended)

Altogether, I did about a half marathon distance in approximately 2:10, but I didn't care about either now. This run marks the official start of my 2010 training "plan",  about which I'll be posting in a separate entry :)

Happy new (training) year everyone!
