My favorite poem....the translated version

May 26, 2005 23:51

Well, here it is by un-popular request, the (roughly) translated version of one of my favorite poems. Some of the idioms didn't translate that well into English, but i tried my best....and i did it all by myself. The poem flows much better in Spanish, but here it is:

“Instances”
By Jorge Luis Borges

If I could live a new life.
In the next one, I would try to commit more errors.
I would no intend to be as perfect, I would relax more.
I would be more foolish of who I am and what I do,
I would take in little things with seriousness.
I would be less hygienic.
I would run more risks, take more trips, contemplate
More sunsets, climb more mountains, swim more rivers.
I would go more places I never have been, I would eat more
Ice cream and fewer vegetables, I would have more real
Problems and less imaginary ones.
I was one of those people who lived sensible and prolifically
Every minute of my life; clearly I had moments of happiness.
But, I would come back only to have the good moments.
For if you all don’t know it, this life created for you is mere moments,
And you loose them.
I was one of those people who never left without a thermometer,
a thermos of warm water, an umbrella, and a parachute.
If I could return to my life, I would live more frivolous.
If I could return to my life, I would start out barefoot at the beginning
Of the spring and continue until the end of fall.
I would do more summersaults, would contemplate more sunrises,
And would play with more kids, if I would have another life time ahead of me.
But, already I am 85 and I know I am dieing.
