The data set is not useful. Roughly 25% of the records can't be used. And considering that 25% represents about 70% of a specific class of machine, it really is useless.
So I've just wasted an afternoon and a morning. Not very happy. I have two data studies and analyses to do based on this data, and it can't be done. Well, it can be done incomplete and loaded with caveats, but that defeats the point of doing the analysis in the first place.
Time to work on something else...
