Chapter Twenty: The End of the Trail
Mount Hood Resort Building, Massachusetts
October 25th, 2006
12:19 AM
Ian and Sam stood over the dead body of Rudin. They looked at the blood pooling onto the ground.
“I guess it’s over.” Sam said quietly, looking up at Ian.
Ian shook his head. “Not yet.” He jumped over Rudin’s body and moved over to Garret. He checked his pulse again. “He’s still alive…” He picked Garret up in his arms. Sam watched him as Ian came over to him. “Here, take him.” Sam nodded and took Garret in his arms.
Suddenly, all of their friends came running in the door to check on them. They all looked disheveled and bruised but every single one of them was there. They’re alive. Sam said, smiling brightly.
“We did it! The Empire’s army has been defeated!” Haley announced, cheering as they came in the room.
“Where the hell did Garret come from?” Natalie said, surprised.
“It’s a long story. But he’s on our side now.” Ian said. They all piled into the room.
“You beat him?! You actually beat him! Oh my god!” Samfa said as she spotted Rudin’s body on the ground.
“Yeah…do you guys have the explosives?” Ian asked.
“Right here!” CJ said. He was carrying two boxes full of dynamite. Paula came in carrying another box and container full of kerosene. “We’re ready to blow this joint!”
“Right then, put one box over by the gateway and the other two by the computer consoles. I’ll take the gas.” Both of them nodded. Paula walked up and gave Ian the gas. The rest of them admired the gateway for a few minutes while CJ and Paula set up the boxes. In minutes, the boxes were in place and all that was left was to pour the kerosene and light it. Then the plan would be complete.
They all turned to each other as they realized this was the last time they would see each other. Ian was busy pouring the kerosene as they all prepared to say goodbye.
“Well…I guess this is how it goes.” Sam said, still holding Garret.
“It isn’t fair…we all just met…we don’t deserve this.” Jen said softly.
“Hey…even though we’ll never see each other again, we’ll always remember one another though, right?” Paula said, smiling softly.
“Yeah, she’s right. I don’t think I could ever thank you for everything you have done for us.” Haley said.
“And I don’t think we could ever thank you for all you’ve done as well.” Natalie said.
“I guess this is goodbye.” Liza said. She held out her hands for Garret.
Suddenly they all heard a gunshot and then the sound of fire starting. They spun around to see that the kerosene had set on fire. It set ablaze quickly and filled the room with fire. But it made a wall of fire between the teens and the gateway. The plan had been to make it surround the whole room. The kerosene had been poured wrong.
On purpose
Ian stood on the other side, holding Garret’s Judge aimed towards where the kerosene was. Everyone immediately gasped as they realized Ian had trapped himself on the other side of the wall of flames. He was staring into the flames but when he saw them all turn towards him he raised his eyes to them, a small smile on his face.
“Ian!! What the hell are you doing?!” Sam yelled, stepping forward.
“The one thing I know that’s right.” He said.
“What do you mean?! You’ll be killed!!” Samfa yelled at him.
He chuckled. “No I won’t, don’t worry.” And he strode over to the computers. He took the key he had taken from Rudin and put it into the slot. The computer beeped and whirred to life. And they all watched as the gateway’s portal opened, the red wall slowly appearing. It shimmered as usual and soon Liza, Natalie, Samfa, Jeff and Ian could see their world.
“You’re going back…” Jeff said. “What are you planning to do?”
“Well, I figure that the gateways need to be destroyed from both sides, right? So this fire will destroy this one and I’ll destroy the one on the other side.” He turned back around. “Sounds like a good plan, doesn’t it?”
“Why the hell can’t we come with you?!” Liza yelled at him.
“Because you all deserve to be in a world away from the despair and anguish. We all have suffered for so long under the rule of the Empire, wishing every day we could escape. And now we finally do and you all want to go back. I’m sorry, but I can’t let you throw yourselves back into the world that you hate so much. It wouldn’t be fair to you.” Ian said.
“Ian! You’ll be killed! Please don’t do this!” Paula yelled out to him.
He shook his head slowly. “I only have one favor to ask, from you guys of this world; take care of them. They’re my best friends and I love them more than anything else. Even more than my own life. Show them how wonderful this world can be, without an Empire trying to take it over. Please let them become your best friends too. You’ll find you’ll love them as well.”
“Ian…you promised…you promised to me!” Natalie screamed. Tears were running down her face.
Ian smiled softly. “I did, didn’t I? Well, I guess my only explanation is that this isn’t something stupid; for once, I think it’s the smart thing to do.” With that, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his parent’s heirlooms, all four of them. He jingled them once and then looked to his friends again. “Give these to Garret when he gets well.” He threw his mother’s necklace and father’s graduation ring over the wall of fire. CJ reached out and caught them then nodded to Ian, a look of sadness over his face.
“I love you all…I hope you know that. And I know you will all live on and prosper in life here. You’ve already proved how strong-willed you all really are. And like Jeff said; we may never meet again…but we’ll never forget each other. Never forget me, please.”
He slowly turned around and looked at the portal. Then he started to march towards it. He could hear the commotion behind him and he knew that his friends were trying to get to him but the Melrose kids were stopping them. He heard them yelling. He hid his face though, to hide his own tears running down his face.
“Ian! Please don’t die! Don’t die!!” He heard Liza yell. He slowly turned his head to look at them. “Whoever said anything about dying?” He cracked one last joke. He then watched as the roof set aflame and all of his friends had to rush out the door to escape the falling debris. He noticed the flames were only inches away from the dynamite now. He smiled one last time and waited until he couldn’t see his friends running away anymore.
“Goodbye…” He whispered. Then he sprinted forward towards the portal and jumped through, back to his home, back to finish the battle.
