Where do you draw the line between hoarding or "packratting" and collecting or "keepsakes?"
Since my son was born, I've noticed that amount of space in my house is rapidly declining. As part of that, I've been forced to take stock of all my stuff, and decide what stays, and what goes.
Over the weekend, I sat in my office and stared for almost two hours. The subject of my attention? A pile old computers, taking up most of the floor space in my closet. 5 minutes into the two hours, 3 of the four computers were outside next to the trash cans. But one haunted me.
What's so special about an old AMD k62 333mhz system? Surely not the PC100 memory, or the mind boggling 4 gig hard drive. It couldn't be the blazing fast 24x CDRom drive. Even though the 56k ISA modem opened up a whole world of communications, that wasn't it either.
This was the first computer I ever built. I bought everything that went into it. It was the first computer I ever installed Linux on. Do I keep it? Do I let it go?
I looked out the window and saw the pile of hefty bags. All those "treasures" and keepsakes. Maybe I'm just too sentimental. Maybe that's why this computer only made it to the back porch, and not to the trash cans.
Should it make the rest of the journey, or does it take a detour into the garage, where it can collect more dust? I've got until Wednesday morning to decide.
