Bio class homework. Normally, he'd give serious consideration to trying to pawn it off on Tim when he got to the Tower for the weekend. But there was a serious talk with Uncle John about personal responsibility. Nothing major, no trouble, but he'd been having what he guessed were normal teenage guy thoughts about that sort of thing. Like, if ( Read more... )

He's leaning against the closet.

They're under the bed, just so you know.

Kon freezes in place.

You...you can't be here. Uncle John wouldn't let you in this house.

Astute, son - although, honestly, you just gave away your secret identity in a moment of shock.

I ask you. What would Clark think? Of course, given that I already know the secret, rather a moot point. But still.

Kon's face fell. He did. He lost control of his thoughts for a moment, and just blabbed the secret, and Luthor already knew.

How'd...you know already?

He sat down on the bed, hard, the shock obvious on his face.

Honestly. You've got my genes in you, boy. You should be able to reason this out on your own. Why isn't your "cousin" here? After all, there's no way I could get past the security systems he and Batman installed around the Kent farm without him knowing something was wrong, correct?

...Because you aren't. Here. You aren't really here. And that means...

Kon visibly paled, his eyes widening slightly.

That means I'm going crazy.

Oh, for the love of -

You're not going crazy, Connor. I am here because I am supposed to be here, designed to be here, and most importantly because your subconscious has identified that now, you need my help.

Kon tilts his head to one side, and shakes it, as though he's attempting to shake loose whatever's causing this obvious hallucination.

You're here...because of me? Oh, Jesus...you did put something in my head. Didn't you. You put you in here.

Astute, son. Of course, you'd never be able to prove it to anybody. I'm not a telepathic construct, there's no microchip or even visible alteration - really, I must say, the work was artistry.

And, as I mentioned, I'm only here because subconsciously you've decided you need me to be here. So quit complaining, hmm?

And I can't just un-decide, right? I mean, if I close my eyes and wish you away to the cornfield, that's not gonna work, is it?

He looks irritated.

Again, I am a manifestation of your subconscious, which, if you had paid attention during your psychology class, you would consciously know that you cannot control.

You have decided, in a sense, that you do not learn quickly enough. Hence, me.

Well, why not learn from the evil-with-a-capitol-E guy who stole his way into being President? Sure. What choice do I have anyway?

...wait, my subconscious brought you out to help me with my bio homework?

Who better to help you understand biology than the one who cloned you, boy? It would appear your subconscious, at least, is quite practical.

Oh, goody. My own personal megalomaniac tutor.

Kon looked up at him with pure, unvarnished disgust.

Nothing like a reminder of all my bad parts. At least I'm the only one who can see and hear you. Can't have cousin Kal knowing I've got you in my head. He'll just hand me over to Batman to be dissected like a laboratory frog.

Precisely so. And we know the Bat has never trusted you, of course.

In any case. Page thirty, if you please. I am here. You may as well make the best of it.

Kon can't shake the image of him, lying on a table in that dark, dank cave, with his skull flayed open, electronic probes attatched to the grey matter of his brain. He supressed a shudder, looking down toward the bag containing his books.

Right. Make the best of it. Sure.
