Having been born a few miles away from where Howie grew up, it's really interesting he qualified his freedom in the US as being economic freedom. But he did leave behind more social freedoms here in Canada when he moved to LA. We're not perfect -- certainly the percentage of Jews who are refusing to have their sons circumcised is very small. But in Howie's home town (Toronto/Scarborough), gays and lesbians have had the right to marry for over 5 years. There are still protests, but they are recognized by government and have remained so despite what the current ruling party likes.
I must say, I like the speak-from-the-gut Howie.
The other interesting thing for me is, until they said the percentages of who voted for Prop 8, the vision I had in my head was of the typical supporter was white fundamentalist Christian because that's the face I see here when I encounter anti-gay and anti-choice protesters. So I'm caucasian and I'm stereotyping. It's eye-opening for me.
My main point is this is very sad in light of the great change that Tuesday brought that at the same time rights were taken away in several states.
