[Lois hopes in vain, for when there's a moment that can be ruined, Lana Lang is there. Or something. Her life is a whole lot of ruin, okay?

Lana leaves Chloe to check the text she received, walking as she reads and staying aware of her surroundings via peripheral. It's from Carter Bowfry, asking about her encounter with the Green Arrow, who turned out to be Oliver Queen of all people. She should have known, now that she looks back, but that's neither her nor there.

She intends to take a seat on the porch to answer, but comes face to face with Lois Lane instead.]

Hi, Lois. [She's about to say it's good to see her, but notices the bottle first.] Are you okay?

[Lana Lang. The last person Lois wants to see right now, her eyes puffy with tears that she's fighting off with everything she has. She glances down and away, hoping against hope somehow Lana won't notice.]

Just needed some air.

[Lana studies her for a moment before putting her phone away.]

You wanted to be alone.

[Her shoulders sink slightly, and she still avoids eye contact, but she sounds a little defeated.] That obvious, huh?

[She sits with her, careful to keep just a little space between them. She doesn't want Lois to feel uncomfortable.] I'd like to think I know you well enough to tell.

Sorry, didn't mean to drag down your homecoming high. [She peels at the edge of the label on the bottle, tensing the slightest bit when Lana sits there, but not moving.] It's just that me and the whole happily ever after scene never really mix very well.

[Her lips press together in worry, but she'll try not to pry.] You don't have any reason to apologize. I hadn't planned on coming until a few hours ago.

Can I ask what changed your mind?

[She pauses for a split second, wanting to choose her words carefully.] A good friend reminded me that I shouldn't let Clark Kent keep me from my best friend's wedding.

[She pauses too for a moment.] I'm sure Chloe's glad you decided to show.

[She nods.] She was.

[Another pause.] Are you going to share that or should I get my own?

[A surprised glance in her direction, but then she proffers the bottle.] And here I thought drowning our sorrows was just a Lane family tradition.

[A twitch of the lip as she takes it.] If I were sitting with anyone else, I would probably be trying to grin and bear it. [And now for a generous gulp or two before passing it back.] Kind of gives new meaning to "misery loves company," doesn't it?

In my experience, misery usually needs a swift kick in the face.

But telling myself that doesn't really always help.

Me either.

Mostly I end up making myself more miserable thinking about how I have no right to be. [Even though in some ways she has...every right to be. Silly Lana, moping is for Clark.]

I'm pretty sure that's as much of a God-given right as the pursuit of happiness ever was.
