Rise of the tinmen from the past

Ah, cybermen. When it comes to cheesy costumes and rubber masks, these guys take the cake. Watching old episodes of dr. who, you can see the snaps, zippers and aluminum foil that make up the costumes. As time passed, they evolved, and well in to the 90s, actually were quite menacing. In some ways more menacing than the daleks.

So you can expect the new Doctor Who to add a new spin to them, and make them the thing of nightmares once again. I'm going to put one big spoiler here... this is a 2parter, so if you want to save some grief wait until the second episode is out before watching this one!

Cut for potential spoilers

How do you reinvent a monster? How do you make them more menacing? Some start with a simple rewrite of that monsters history. To avoid any problems, these latest episode avoids a lot of the continuity problems by dumping our heroes in a parallel earth. This also lets them have some fun with the revolving cast of regulars by putting them a slightly different setting.

Then there's the twist with the baddies. Before, the cybermen were just these alien creatures that caused destruction. Now, there's a whole new level of terror as you are introduced in to what exactly they are. They aren't just menacing men in silver space suits, they are really one man's vision of the evolution of mankind. A living brain wrapped up in a metal body. No emotions, invunerable and obediant and very deadly.

My only disappointment in the whole thing? Even for a 2 parter, there was a bit of a rush to set up the cliff hanger. There was just a lot of story trying to bust out of the 40 minutes of dr. who, and then no preview of the next episode. Not surprising considering how it ends, but still, give me something to salivate on until next week.

Still, they win. I'm hooked, and kicking myself for not waiting until next weeks episode to get the whole story at once. Going in to this one, I knew it would be a 2 parter, but I watched anyway.

The new Doctor Who is definitely proving to be by the fans, for the fans. Using old villains in new and interesting ways just keeps a fan boy like me sitting, waiting for more.
