Here is my short and sweet impression of Party Monster, only because I was really high while watching it and need to flush it out of my system, and everyone seems so unsure what to say about it.
The first major hurdle is the acting, which is bad. But this is better understood after watching much of the movie when you realize that the direction is even worse than the bad acting, and sometimes, with mediocre actors, it’s really left in the hands of the director (and in this case, two directors) to pull something special out of the actors. This does not happen in this movie. In fact, the reason this movie ultimately fails is due to the directors/writers infatuation with the subject matter. I believe that left in the hands of a director who didn’t quite find these people so interesting (because they’re not) the actors would have had an expectation to act to, a goal to reach. Instead they do bad impressions based on stock footage. And the whole thing has been work-shopped like a stage play, so it plays out as though there’s a small black box audience in attendance. I’ve seen similarly small budgeted movies, shot in much the same manner, that work as cinematic experiences (Chuck and Bucks leaps to mind rather quickly). This is not the worst movie I’ve ever seen, which is a shame because at least then it would be more memorable.
Anyway, I have three days worth of newspapers to read, so I best get to reading. ~m
