Very interesting. I, too, am obsessed with this topic in SPN. I agree with Kripke's conclusion: that there is a tangible, visible (read: obvious) side of Evil in the world, and that there is no tangible, visible, obvious side of Good because he wants us to see Good through human action.

I applaud you on picking out the Recap's "Winchester motto," as it is key to the Good/Evil Grey Line which has emerged on the show. In season one and two, they used Dean's sound clip from "Wendigo" of "saving people, hunting things." You correctly pointed out that Kubric and Gordon probably had the same motto, and we as an audience were obviously meant to question their morality. Heavily. The boys were clear in season one - for the most part - on the Good/Evil partition. (Yeah, yeah, "Faith": so shoot me for generalizing to make a point. :P) In season two, the Grey Line of Morality was a MAJOR thread of the mytharc, so the Recap soundclip was an irony, and to display to the audience the stance the boys were growing out of. Note that in season three, the motto has changed, the boys having learned their lesson from season two - for the most part again: “Look Dad’s gone now. We have to carry out his legacy and that means hunting down as many evil sons of bitches as we can.”

Note that "evil sons of bitches" has replaced "hunting things." In addition for the legal necessity of adjective build-up, there is a curious lack of "things." Now it's just "evil"...which could be human. Or hunters. And it could ALSO mean GOOD demons. Or just amiable ones like Demon!Casey in "Sin City." *shakes head* The day I thought Dean would want to save a demon...

You mention a good point: That God's Will isn't an clear statement, but an INTERPRETATION. Ah, postmodernism. How I hate your brain-twisting evil. (Have you read my post on postmodernism? I compare it Dean's stuffed mouth in "Tall Tales.")

YAY! I love new meta! JUST IN TIME!

And I also wanted to say: Love the juxtaposition of the Kubric/Gordon embrace of "Fresh Blood" with the mirror of the Sam/Dean embrace of "AHBL1." Gotta love your eye for the visual cues.

Aww, thanks. :)

I have to admit the initial reason why Kubric/Gordon's embrace made a lasting impression on me was because it tripped my gaydar meter. And, yeah, I guess that's connected to my wincest meter. *laughs*

First: Whoot! Analyzing tag lines! It's up there with analyzing title cards XD!

Second: *nods emphatically* OMG. The Show so loves irony (and so do I)! I'm tempted to just write a stupid post on all the irony bonking us over the head. *spazzes out*

Third: Your brain is awesome.

The day I thought Dean would want to save a demon...

If the S3 Sam and Dean reversal continues on its current course, I think we might just see more than Dean wanting to save a demon. How much do you want to be at some point in the future (S4?) we'll get Dean actually saving a demon? Gah. How much do I love Kripke and his character development?

brain-twisting evil.

LOL! Ah yes, the lovely subjectivity of it all. Heh. When in doubt chalk it up to POV. ;)

Have you read my post on postmodernism? I compare it Dean's stuffed mouth in "Tall Tales."

Nooo. *big eye* How did I miss this? *is embarassed* It sounds fascinating. Do you have a link (please?)?

Dude, have I missed more of your meta? You didn't happen to squeeze out the last of your "Hero's Journey" meta without me noticing, did you? Sometimes I can be a complete bonehead. Obviously I should just go haunt your journal.

*nearly indecipherable squee about the new episode*

*squees incoherently with you and flaps hands* Less than 12 hours...
