It was in the pre dawn hours on a Wednesday when Mrs. Hudson was awoken by a light rapping at her sitting room door. “Just a moment” she said as she lit the candle she kept next to her bed. She wrapped her dressing gown around her to guard her modesty and against the cold of the November morning.
She opened the door to find her new lodger standing there. “What is it” she asked? “Is there something wrong?”
“I’m afraid that I will have to quit my lodgings here Mrs. Hudson. I came to bring my portion of next months rent to make up for my sudden departure and to give you back the key.” Mr. Walsh placed both into her hand. Mrs. Hudson was stunned to stay the least. Mr. Holmes and Mr. Walsh seemed to be getting along so well.
“I must make haste. I have a train to catch. Goodbye Mrs. Hudson” Mr. Walsh gave her a sad smile before he turned to leave.
Mr. Holmes would provide no explanation for his fellow lodgers sudden departure when she questioned him over breakfast. He locked himself in his room for the rest of the week barely touching the trays Mrs. Hudson set for him.
Mrs. Hudson just shook her head and wondered if she would ever find anyone who could stand to live with Mr. Holmes.
