I really wish people would ask different questions and react differently to these kinds of violent events. It bothers me a great deal that the perpetrator gets labeled as a "monster" and no one really asks what caused the shooter to choose his course of action. These things will keep happening -- over and over and over again -- until society as a whole starts thinking about and addressing the real, underlying reasons why this type of violence occurs. It's more than one person's choice, in my opinion; it's about a society that permits and even encourages violence, and fails repeatedly to help people that are suffering from extreme mental anguish or illness.

I was looking up some statistics on school shootings in the last ten years, because I saw this stat on TV about the number in North America and wondered how many there had been in Canada. It turns out that there are TWO documented school shootings that have taken place in Canada since 1996, about half a dozen or so in various other countries, and MORE THAN THIRTY in the United States. To me, that indicates a real problem in U.S. society -- not just with the people that commit these crimes.
