Part of an email I sent to my dad yesterday:
"Today I talked with my Spanish teacher, Luis, about my background in Spanish and my future and stuff like that, and it was really helpful and eye-opening. He said that he can see that I'm really intelligent and that I love the stuff he's teaching. He said that it's very rare to have a student who can grasp all the information he's throwing at them and use it in creative ways and that he's really excited that I can do that. Also, he knows I enjoy studying and so he thinks I should go into an academic, research-based career and just never stop studying. He explained how, when people have a passion, careers kind of follow them, and that even having intelligence and an extensive education are secondary to having a great interest in something. He made me feel special and like, for once, I actually can have a realistic and happy future. I've been looking for some sort of motivation for years, and I feel like he just kind of handed it to me on a silver platter. So, needless to say, I'm very content right now. :) Also, I had a presentation today on Puerto Rican Spanish, and I did really well despite all the drama last night, and one girl came up to me after class and congratulated me and thanked me for clarifying things for her!
And now I'm watching TV with Angela and doing a lot of laughing and bonding. Hooray.
Things are looking up.
Love,
Ali"
Soon I'm going to get started studying Dominican Republic Spanish (I'm not presenting this time, but I have to make a list of characteristics anyway) and brainstorming for my various essays. It's going to be a busy weekend.
