The Republican National Party’s website is littered with propaganda. For a second, it almost tricked me into believing that I was a Republican. However, I soon realized that headlines reading “help confirm Judge Alito” and “contact your state representative,” were the traps that led to control over the opinions of Americans.
The first thing that is prominent as one views the homepage is a large picture of poker faced republicans sitting down to what appears to be a highly important and beneficial meeting that is entirely essential to the happiness and safety of all Americans. This caption reads “Patriot Act Vital to Protecting America.” To gain support for this program the republican party has compiled a list of reasons and anecdotes that support the passage of The Patriot Act. Even the name rings through with trickery. Clearly, if one does not support the Patriot Act then one is not a patriot. If one is not a patriot, then one does not support America. If one does not support America, then one is obviously a terrorist. Clearly. Simple wording has had an important effect upon the sentiments of America.
The website mentions absolutely nothing about a certain hurricane that nobody wants to speak about. However, it does contain a friendly New years greeting from the president. George Bush says to the entire population of America, “Laura and I send our best wishes for a happy New Year.” This makes me feels as if I know them. The president and first lady are no different than the couple living across the street. It’s like getting a holiday card from a neighbor; who better to be the leader of the free world but the guy next door?
I soon found the option of contacting my republican representative for the Sate of Florida. I thought I might be able to express my own feelings towards the confirmation of Judge Alito. However, the republican party chose my opinions for me. They made a tidy little compilation of all the positive aspects of judge Alitos career and personality. They formatted this into an unalterable letter to my Senator expressing my deep desire for Mr. Alito to be selected as Supreme Court Justice. After having sufficiently told me how I feel about the matter they asked me to recruit other republicans. I thought about these prospects with vigor and then remembered I was a democrat.
I left the site immediately.
