My Ask the Maker thread is here if you have any burning questions you need answered.  If anything in this tutorial isn't clear enough, don't be afraid to ask me about it. ♥

I knew I wanted a close crop, so I started off with this:

This icon was made when I was really paranoid about oversharpening, so I applied a 0.2 gaussian blur to the base to try to prevent it. IDK if it worked or not, so this step is completely optional.

First I wanted to take care of the lighting and contrast, so I used a Brightness/Contrast layer. I didn't want to make things too bright, so I played it safe and only did Brightness (75), Contrast (25).

I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to color things, but I felt that the icon would look best if it had a warm tone, so I applied a color fill layer (7b6444) on soft light.

I had the warm tone I wanted, but things were too dark, so I used Levels to brighten things up.
17 | 1.32 | 193

At this point I'd made up my mind about coloring, and decided to go for a faded/pale coloring. I created a gradient the following gradient and set it to 55% opacity.

1st point: f5f3e3; 2nd point: 000000

I wanted to make sure I didn't lose too much color (thanks to the gradient map) so I added a +15 vibrance layer.

Next I added the following texture (I'm not sure where it came from... but I'm pretty sure it's from slayground) at screen with 50% opacity. I clipped a Levels layer to the texture with the settings: 11, 0.73, 255.

Next I sharpened it (sharpen however you prefer, as even I'm not certain how I sharpened this icon originally).  Then I added the following texture (by me) on soft light at 40%.
