A SatAM-based Knuckles, from a "SatAM Season 3/4" story idea I conceived based on SatAM writer notes and my own thoughts on how the show might have gone post-Doomsday. As such, this Knuckles is AU; his PB is actually from Sonic Underground.
Long ago, when Mobius was new, a highly advanced society of talking animals covered the planet. Their advanced status was due to the usage of powerful talismans of unknown origin called the Chaos Emeralds. These animals, the ancient race, lived for a very long time in harmony with these gems.
However, it is said that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. As time went by the ancients began to abuse the power of the Chaos Emeralds and the council of elders proposed that the power of the Chaos Emeralds was given to them to use to subjugate others. They began to force the evolving lifeforms that were beginning to emerge around the planet into slavery and hardship. Soon enough, the planet Mobius wasn't enough; the ancient race began to look to the stars in order to subjugate the entire universe.
Only one young boy was against the plan, but his voice, in a sea of millions, was practically nothing. That is, until the Chaos Emeralds gained voices and souls of their own. Through the boy, the newly-sentient Chaos Emeralds tried to stop the ancients from continuing their plans for universal domination, begging them to cease their abuse of their powers. The response of the ancients was to attack the boy, leaving him near death, as punishment for daring to defy the will of the people.
It would be the last act of evil the ancients would engage in. Before the day was done, the ancient race would be gone, and only the boy remained. But he was no longer the child who had been struck down by his own people. He was power incarnate, the instrument of chaos itself. He was, and would now be, the eternal guardian of the Chaos Emeralds.
He was...the Fist.

After Ixis Naugus returned from the Void and took over Robotropolis, he found that he needed a cure for the Void's side effect - and more power to take over all of Mobius. After a series of setbacks thanks to the Freedom Fighters preventing him from getting the talismans he needed, Ixis Naugus came upon ancient scrolls which revealed the location of the Cave of Chaos, the legendary cove where the legendary monster, the Fist, and the Chaos Emeralds, were. King Acorn, having been freed from Naugus' grip, also revealed this information to Sonic and his friends, and they made their way to the Great Desert to try and stop the forces of evil.
Unfortunately, Naugus managed to kidnap Sally during the battle, forcing Sonic to come after him and run right into the Cave of Chaos - and into the jaws of the Fist. Unfortunately, that's right where Naugus ended up, as the Fist had deemed him too evil to touch the Chaos Emeralds and live. Next was Sonic's turn to be destroyed by the Fist, but instead of trying to take the Emeralds or plead for his own life, Sonic instead asked that the Fist let Sally go, and also to try and stop Robotnik from taking the Chaos Emeralds. Unfortunately, it was right at that moment that Robotnik crashed through the ceiling and stole all seven gems, severing the Fist's power and causing the cave to ultimately collapse.
Though neither Sonic and Sally had seen him, it appeared that there was another survivor of Robotnik's attack - a strange red creature that Tails and Amy pulled out of the rubble. Upon waking up, the creature claimed he had been a prisoner of the Fist as well, that his name was Knuckles, and that he wanted to help get the Chaos Emeralds back from Robotnik. Unfortunately, Robotnik used the energies of the Chaos Emeralds to become a deity, Super Robotnik, and he scattered the remnants of the Emeralds across the world. Now there's little time before Super Robotnik creates the ultimate weapon of destruction: the Death Egg. The only way to stop it is to gather the Chaos Emeralds and find a way to restore energy to them.
However, the question remains, especially when its Sonic doing the questioning. Who is Knuckles? Where did he come from, and why does he seem interested in Sally? And...is he really who he says he is? If not, then who - what - is he?
