Hydroxycut and Risk

How much risk is too much risk?

The FDA recently warned consumers to stop using Hydroxycut - a weight loss supplement millions of people (Including both Ice Bear and myself) have used. The reason? 1 death and 72 serious illnesses. We know nothing about these illnesses except that at least one of them was caused in someone taking 4 times the amount the label recommended.

Have you ever read the warning labels on medications? My migraine medication has caused strokes. My Tylenol and Asprin have both caused liver failure and death. I won’t even get into the warnings that go along with my mom’s medications, but just her plavix causes her to be tested every 6 months for the beginning stages of blindness.

How many deaths does obesity cause each year?

So on one hand I’m being told that being fat will kill me. But on the other hand, this supplement that has helped many people but hurt 73 is too dangerous for me to use. Is it more dangerous than being fat? Why am I not allowed to make that risk assessment for myself?

This is a fairly regular rant topic for me, but when did the government turn into my parent? As an adult, I expect myself to make decisions that shape the course of my life. Just this past weekend I went to a party where free alcohol was served. Why was this allowed big brother government? Drinking has killed far more people than hydroxycut.

For all I know, maybe it really is dangerous. But 73 illnesses seems like a very small threshold to declare something dangerous when it has been used as long as this has and without knowing how the people took it or what underlying issues they had.
