So, apparently Southern Ontario is going to get hit by this "Frankenstorm". Or not. Depends on who you listen to. It is looking like Halloween might be a washout here, which is a bummer; it's my favourite holiday (yes, I know it's not officially a holiday, but it SHOULD be). I was going to start decorating the outside of the house this weekend, but now I'm now so sure. Tomorrow it's supposed to rain all day so it definitely wont be until at least Sunday anyway. Tomorrow I'm going in to Toronto to the "World's Biggest Bookstore". Yes, it's huge and I love it! Then my daughter's heading up to spend the weekend with my niece at her university. I've just spent 40 minutes trying to explain the public transportation route she will have to take to get back home. She's all freaked out because she has to take a bus to the subway, then the subway to the train. She claims she's never taken a bus by herself. I finally got fed up and told if she could fly all the way to Poland (including a transfer in Frankfurt) and takes trains all over that country all by herself at the age of 21 then I was confident she could manage to take a 5 minute bus ride! She finally agreed. I did tell her if she's that worried just to call a cab or walk to the subway. She's worried she'll get on the wrong subway; I told her that's not likely - there are 2 trains, one going northbound and one going southbound, so all she has to do is follow the signs for the southbound subway train. Sigh. Sometimes I forget that my kids didn't grow up taking buses and subways the way I and everyone who grows up in Toronto did.
My back is hurting tonight; a lot. I mentioned it to my son when he asked me how I was, and he made some rude, flip comment that made me angry. He's done it before, and I thought I'd made it clear how I felt, but apparently not. I'm sure he picks up on this from his father, who has no ability whatsoever to deal with sickness or pain (his or anyone else's). Still, I'm not impressed.
I went through all of my husband's shirts this week; that doesn't sound like a big thing until you realize there were about 150 of them. Seriously. I made him try dozens of them on and now have a mountain of shirts that he's getting rid of. I'm pretty sure some of them he'd had for 20 years (no wonder they no longer fit). I also moved all of my clothes from our walk-in closet to the closet in the spare room and gave the whole walk-in to him. I just got sick of having to move his shirts from one closet to the other every change of season, plus there's that whole period where he'd wearing both short and long sleeved shirts so this is going to work out better for both of us. I'm considering trying to sell some of the shirts - something I've never done before, but with so many, it seems like it might be worthwhile.
I finally started reading Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd, a history of Britain that starts 10,000 B.C. It's a big read (1000+ pages), but I've always been interested in British history, so I'm enjoying it. Who knew that Stonehenge was just one of many "henges" throughout Britain? I certainly didn't. I'm also reading Lillian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who...." series of books. I'd read a couple of them and really enjoyed them so I decided to start at the beginning and read through the series (not all at once, there's a LOT of books). The main character has two siamese cats, and one of them (Koko) reminds me so much of Demon (one of my cats - who I'm sure is part-Siamese) it's uncanny. Anyway, they're nice fun, quick reads.
