Marxism and Star Trek

So, I was sitting today in class trying to determine my teachers points in his sort of ramble about how basic economics works and he started talking about Marx.  This lead me on a huge tangent in my head about Marxism and it came around when I was thinking about the final stage in his theory where the ultimate goal is to be able to do whatever you want with your time and everything you need is provided for you basically.  Yes, there's much more to this I know but that's the basic premise of it.  Anyway, it immediately made me think of Star Trek.  If you think about the world of Star Trek it is very much the ideal image of this last change in Marx's theory.  I'm sure others have come to this conclusion because I can't be the first to make the corrilation.

In Star Trek and specifically within the Federation's society everything is more or less provided for you.  You have replicators that can create anything you wish and there isn't a monetary system.  You can do what you like with your time.  There are ofc jobs to be done and such but really you can do whatever job you like and have the skills for.  It is more an intellectual society in the sense that there is not much need for laborers and most of the jobs are high skill jobs.  You start to see this more today as the major countries need to bring in a less skilled labor force from other places while their own citizens have to be more skilled/educated for the other jobs that are available.  It makes you sorta wonder about Roddenberry. hehehe
