The largest problem about sleeping all day (besides the dagger-like
looks I get from my mom) is that I remember some pretty bizarre dreams:
Two nights ago, I dreamt that I was at my high
school when it was announced that there was a disaster at a huge rock
festival. The sound system was miswired, and the entire area went up
like a bomb, killing 10 major bands and thousands of devoted fans. My
classmates and I skipped class to listen to pirated copies of the dead
bands' music and mourn for all the songs that never would be.
Last night, I dreamt that I was in a play
practicing at a local school. As 99% of my dreams revolve around
failure and anxiety about failure, it's not surprising that I kept
screwing up. In particular, I couldn't keep track of my props. One of
the props was a working bow-and-arrow set; unfortunately, irresponsible
little kids kept getting their hands on the bow and shooting holes in
the ceiling. Then my most important prop, a live gerbil, kept escaping
and running out on stage during other people's lines. At some point, it
escaped from the building onto the grounds. Finally, I caught it and
picked it up; the ungrateful animal not only bit my thumb, it EXPLODED.
Fortunately, there were no
internal organs or blood, just a skeleton that looked like a horseshoe
crab and a patch of gray fur. I picked up the pieces and put them in a
shoebox before going to explain to the irritable director that I had
caused the rodent to explode by letting it bite my thumb. Instead, I
was distracted by the appearance of a nocturnal animal with enormous
red eyes and a bushy, black-and-white banded tail. The regular variety
lived in trees, but I ran across the GIANT variety, which were about
the size of an SUV. Even the juvenile was the size of a horse.
I didn't feel threatened at all;
they meandered into the schoolbuilding and down into the basement,
where they slept during the day. At that point, I noticed the creatures
had left behind an egg. I picked it up and tried to put the egg into
the cage with its mother, but it dissolved in my hands. I was horrified
to have killed the offspring of such beautiful, gentle animals, but the
zookeeper said that it happened all the time; he'd just feed the yolk
to the mother animal and everything would be fine.
When I returned to the drama
room, the director was nowhere to be seen, but the whole cast was
watching the end of a kids' adventure movie. In the movie, a girl, her
younger brother and a friendly imp were in a floating house, battling
off an invasion of evil winged horses. The little brother suggested
pushing the winged horses out through the picture window, but it
accomplished little because the horses could fly anyway. That is, until
the imp used its magic to drop huge boulders on the ones that had been
pushed out the window. Then I woke up.
The critters looked a bit like these
ring-tailed lemurs.
Amazing exploding gerbil!
Analysis of Bounce_Ko's dreams:
Pop-culture analysis:
- According to my "Dreams Explained: book for Girls", both dreams
mean that I will soon meet a cute guy. Actually, according to that
book, ALL dreams mean that I will soon meet a cute guy. Weird book.
Pseudo-scientific analysis:
Dream 1:
- Dreaming about a major disaster reflects the societal anxiety of
the post-9/11 world. Of course, major disasters occurred before 9/11
too, and many had much higher death rates, but no one seems to remember
them.
- The mechanism of the sound system reflects my suppressed anxiety
about being elected Sound Head next year at college, despite the fact
that I don't actually know how the sound system works.
Dream 2:
- Dreaming about drama and the theater is an expression of my
attachment to and competition with my older sister, a theater goddess.
It may also be a reflection of a desire to abandon sound design and
return to acting.
- Dreaming about losing things is a reflection of my fear of responsibilities and my fear of failing in those responsibilities.
- Dreaming about the gerbil's death shows that I continue to have
insecurities regarding a gerbil I owned 3 years ago, and which I was
convinced hated me because it was constantly running away.
- The giant nocturnal animals show my desire for a personal connection with nature.
- The broken egg shows my fear that I will always f*ck everything up.
- Dreaming about a mother eating her own egg represents a cycle of rebirth. Or it's just kinda gross.
- Dreaming about evil flying horses means nothing whatsoever.
- Dreaming about dropping rocks on evil flying horses reflects my desire for creative solutions to impossible problems.
The BS-filtered analysis:
Dreams are weird. If I stuck to a more regular sleep schedule, at least I wouldn't remember them.
