I saw a new musical called "Was" at Northwestern University
this past Thursday evening. It's another Oz revisionist piece,
based on a novel of the same title. Excellent music and lyrics,
and for the most part pretty satisfying. I got to meet the
director Tina Landau, who directed and wrote book and
additional lyrics for the show "Floyd Collins," which is
one of my current favorites. I gushed a little and asked
her to autograph something, which she happily did. Landau
is the co-inventor of a directorial technique called "Viewpoints"
that involves the cast in developing various movements
and other things that enhance the interpretation of a
play or show. The cast of "Was," mostly N.U. students,
were very good.
Yesterday my collaborator Doug came out from the city and
we worked on the music and outlines of the two shows that
we're working on at the moment. It was a lot of fun, and
I think that the outlines are getting very solid.
I finally got to run with the group yesterday morning; that
was wonderful, although I could only actually run with Joe
Vierthaler, who was recovering from the NYC marathon last
weekend.
Cheers.
