A week ago, I was in Bakersfield doing some research, when a guy with a cross walked by. It was obviously a religious statement - it was "crucifixion-sized," and he was carrying it along the street with a look of grave determination.
It was, however, a pretty goofy image. Although he had shouldered his burden, I noticed that the bottom end of the cross (the bit that goes in the ground) had a helpful wheel attached to it, for ease of transport. So really, he was wheeling a cross down the street. I did an un-Christian amount of chuckling.
The Filipinos who are crucifying themselves today would give that guy a terribly scornful look, I'd imagine.
