See, now, the thing about certain incidences of pain is the way they happen so quickly you're left wondering if they happened at all. The hurt is sharp -- it's a bite, a slap, a pinch -- and fades but does not linger. And as you stand there breathing your quickened breath you wonder if you really felt it at all and then you key in on what you are feeling, which is the departure of pain. There's a certain addictive quality to that sensation, that recession of hurt, and after a while you think maybe, just maybe, you'd like to feel it again. Wouldn't you?
