If you haven't watched United yet then I suggest you amend that. Yes, even you, people who aren't interested in football and Liverpool supporters. An absolutely heartbreaking bit of television, and beautifully shot on top of it. It's the sort of topic that could easily degenerate into melodrama, but here is treated with a deft hand that shakes off sentimentality without losing any of its very human grief. There's a point at which the young Bobby Charlton pulls himself free from his chair and, dazed and confused and bleeding from a gash in his forehead, walks through the snow. He looks around him and there are items blown free from the aeroplane: cigarettes and playing cards and, poignantly, Mark Jones' (who - as an aside - went to my school) pipe. And then all of a sudden a burnt, blasted corpse, that is quite unrecognisable but clearly young. It's very brief but brings the awfulness of it home, these dead young men and evaporated potential. Wonderful telly.
