So often when you return to fanfiction that you read as a teenager you find it to be awful. Those years have warped your tastes beyond recognition, and you see the fic for what it is. It's always a disappointment. Not so in the case for The Very Secret Diary by Arabella, I am pleased to report. This, for me, is the penultimate Tom Riddle fanfiction. It is that rare thing, a fic that takes canon and enriches it. You read it and think "yes, this is exactly how it happened." Probably the scariest fic I have ever read. Watching the tone of Tom Riddle's voice change as Ginny begins to suspect him is superbly done, watching the way he manipulates her so convincing and hair-raising. An absolutely wonderful fic, one of my all-time favourites, and the one that kicked off my love for epistolary stories. Well worth the re-read: I am rubbing my arms to quell the goosepimples after the end.

(This is pretty much how I've spent my Bank Holiday. I did go into town earlier, but the second I arrived there I walked into New Look. The rest is a blank, and the next thing I remember is standing in the street wearing a dazed expression and carrying two bags of boots. I sent myself home after that because I cannot be trusted with a debit card.)
