Red Peak

New Zealand is going through a flag referendum initiated by our conservative (from a NZ perspective) government which has been largely unengaged with by the New Zealand populace.

Four options were selected (from 10,291 designs suggested) which were largely panned, with two designs varying only in colour choice. All four original options also included fern graphics which has proved popular with some, and unpopular with others. A fifth option, Red Peak, has managed to fight it's way onto the list of options to be voted on in the first of two referendums with the first being which alternate flag is most popular followed by the second being a vote between the current and the winner of the first.

I signed the petition to encourage Red Flag's addition to the first referendum because I felt it was a stronger flag than any of the three selected options.

I don't believe we'll be changing our flag however next year, as I suspect that no matter which flag option wins the first referendum, we'll see an overwhelming vote to maintain the current flag from people who can't see why we would change (traditionalists), those who think the process is wrong and those who are simply voting in protest at the money being spent on this rather than other options (like feeding NZ children who need to be fed) and those whose option doesn't win the first vote.

Down the track? A new flag is a possibility. And Red Peak seems to be accumulating more interest and support as time progresses.
