- bret easton ellis:
he wrote one of my favorite books, "less than zero," and one of the best contemporary american novels, "american psycho," which also lead to one of my favorite movies, and my introduction to one of my favorite actors (christian bale). that's a lot of favorites. he's extremely masagonistic, which is evident in his new novel, "lunar park," a work that he claims is fiction, but is obviously somehwhat autobiographical. i mean, when his actress girlfriend confronts him with her pregnancy, he accuses her of cheating on him with keanu reeves. it's great stuff. and yeah, he's a genius. - dave gahan:
sex. perhaps my first crush on an actual man. there were the jtt's and the jonathan jackson's before him, but none could compare to dave gahan. many will say (and have said) that he's cheesy and slightly homosexual, but i beg to differ. his voice is heavenly and his moves are hellish. perfect combo. - failure:
i first discovered failure on a depeche mode tribute album called "for the masses," in which they covered "enjoy the silence." it's one of the best covers i've heard. that lead me to buy "fantastic planet" which is one of the best rock albums to come out of the mid-90's. this band is so incredibly underrated, and always pushed aside as "too commerical" or "too poppy," but the melodic structure and vocal patterns of each song are completely innovative. i'm still blown away by this band. oh yeah, and without them we may have never had autolux or year of the rabbit. - j.t. leroy:
vanessa got me into this guy. we were going to form a book club with "the heart is deceitful above all things" as our starting point, but i believe i got too caught up in school, as is always the case. his writing style actually reminds me of bret easton ellis in a way, but much more gay. "sarah" is a pretty decent book, but i think that "the heart is deceitful..." is a contemporary masterpiece. - kraftwerk:
i have a kraftwerk poster in my apartment; the one where they're all dressed in red with black ties and looking to the side, in their typically linear pose - the man machine cover, i believe. every time someone enters my house for the first time they have to make a comment. the following are the most common:
1. is that a nazi poster?
2. that's so gay.
3. i love kraftwerk!
i have found that there are two types of people in this world: those who appreciate kraftwerk, and those who have no idea who they are. basically, if you listen to any of that electro-clash, new-wave copying bullshit, and you don't know about kraftwerk, then you're an absolute idiot. and if you listen to good electronic, or any good music that is actually influenced by electronic, and you don't know about kraftwerk, then you're an even bigger idiot. - my morning jacket:
i seriously love these guys. collin and i saw them at the roxy about two years ago and it was one of the best shows i've seen. they have this contagious energy, which is really kind of strange for stoney musicians. they're the only band who could stretch a song five mintes longer than the original and still hold my interest. - rick moody:
he has this fantastic anthology of short stories called "demonology," which includes one of my all-time favorites, "boys." it's structurally ingenious and i'm kind of jealous that i wasn't the one to write it. he's best known work is probably "the ice storm," though i prefer the short stories. i almost cried because he lectured at csulb last night, but i had a class which i couldn't miss. i think it was something about aging in america, which sounds quite boring, but if you've ever read anything by moody i'm sure you would agree that he could make just about anything interesting. - stella:
i think all i have to say is michael ian black, michael showalter and david wain. anything involving these three people is going to be one of my favorite things. next to arrested development, this is the funniest show on tv. - the food network:
if i'm home, and not doing homework, this channel is on about 80% of the time. there is something kind of hypnotizing about watching someone chop an onion, don't you think? well, maybe not, but i'm passionate about cooking and tyler florence. - wentworth miller:
have you seen prison break? if you have, you will automatically understand my obsession. his eyes are so incredibly intense that i'm almost positive he could induce orgasms just by staring. not only is he the most beautiful man i have ever seen in my life, but he graduated from princeton with a degree in english. um, soul mate? i think his only downfall is his name.
