Ow.

On Sunday, April 17, 2005, my wife and I were sightseeing in/around Niles, MI in our newish Toyota Prius. (Niles is in the southwest corner of Michigan, less than 20 miles from Lake Michigan and the Indiana border.) We arrived at a five-way intersection, and stopped at the first, but not the second, of the stop signs. The Prius provided braking force for a gray Grand Am.

All drivers and passengers (four in total) walked from their respective sites with minimal injury. My shoulder probably hit the door, and has been stiff and sore since, although it has been getting steadily better.

The rear driver-side quarter panel of the Prius is squished. The denting starts just under the gas-intake door, but no gas leak was detected. The housing of the driver-side tail-light remains, but not much else. The hatch works, but not comfortably. The rear wheel has been pushed about 10 degrees out of its normal position.

The Prius has been towed to an impound lot in Berrian Springs, and is currently awaiting review from a claims adjuster. We hope to hear something within the next week.

We rented a car and drove home yesterday. I will provide more news as it develops.

Lessons for the day:
Look both ways before crossing the street.
Side-curtain air bags are really, really, really good.
