DANG.
I love this poem -- and I so want this book.
I love poetry that tells a story. Poems that read like stories are, for me, lessons in how to make every word count. I love writing both prose and poetry, though these days I write more prose than poetry. I'd love to read her poem on coming back from maternity leave.

I'm a fan of poems
I read and I write
This battle of words
and the results of the fight

Stanzas and verses
meter and rhyme
they all come together
expressions sublime

So I hope this will win me
this book your friend has written
'cause I don't just have the bug
I've already been bitten

Remember that fateful reading you invited me to read my amateur poems (thankfully) before Jan read? I felt like the world's luckiest ugly duckling, rubbing wings with a swan like that. :)

That said: I love poetry because it's the perfect distillation of words, sounds, images and feelings. It can be the smallest moment captured precisely or a broad topic neatly encapsulated in a few lines.

I love how poetry can make you see small aspects of the world in a completely different way. The curve of a flower petal, the softness of skin, all gets reduced to its essence in poetry. It's simple. But still complex. And we need more of that in life.

Erin, I love the way that good poetry commands your attention. A poem is succinct, but expansive in its emotions and impact.
