I was hoping with my subject title that Phil and Kirsty might come and write it for me.
I have finished my introduction for my dissertation! *cheers* 1,000 words down; 9,000 to go!
Okay, so I handed in my original vague concept of my dissertation back in... June and since then, it's been all go. While juggling other essays, preparing to hold my own seminar, presentations and Viva assessments, I have been slowly making my way through the (few) books I can find on the subject of Xerxes.
Of course, I have had a fair few wonderful breaks in between with the lovely Lucy, Anais, Tchi and Siri :D
My supervisor today handed me back my draft introduction and I realised that my dissertation has diverted away from the representation of Xerxes in general and seems to have gone down the route of Greek Orientalism... more work for me but the words want what they want I guess. He suggested also that I find as many Eastern sources that I can on Xerxes, which is difficult to say the least. I have the Bible of course and various Persian inscriptions that I have found in secondary sources. I asked the campus library to order me a copy of Ctesias and Photius in specially and they, while reluctant, acquiesced. I now realise why they were so reluctant... £65 for a book as big as the first Harry Potter. Whooooops.
Hopefully tomorrow, I'll have my first chapter finished as well and be able to tell whoever asks how Xerxes as a king has been presented by Aeschylus and Herodotus, how this differs from the Eastern sources and how this is a form of Greek Orientalism (Greeks Vs Persians).
I have no idea what I'm actually arguing anymore... help me.
Dissertation post 1# over.
