Surprise foal and foot crunchings

Aug 08, 2007 12:56

Big surprise this morning. I feed the minis first after the cows, and saw them all clustered at the end of the backyard that borders the road. Marmelade, Secret and Epona came back to me for feed so I went up to Misty after taking care of them and found her standing exhausted and proud beside a new foal, born within the hour. I alerted DH and Pat, finished the feeding and went back to help out as they examined the foal.
One of our neighbors stopped and let us know he had passed a black mare down at the mailboxes leading down a private road (1 mile north) and wondered if it was ours.
Last week one of our neighbors picked up one of the two mares she had bought off us so that had to be her coming back to our herd.
I grabbed a lead rope and took off up the road and sure enough, we met each other at the first bend acting very homesick and lonely. I had a little trouble getting back in as the county ditch mowers chose that time to come through but I finally got her in by the housetrailer. After a 45+ minute fight to patch up a gash she got busting her pen, we turned her back out with the girls. My toes got a it stomped on so they are a bit sore, even after a soaking.
Next time, they both go at once and after I make sure their intended paddock-to-be is secure. >_<

Pics of the new mini-foal, Breeze will be posted later.
