So one of the first things that I discovered on my return to Western was that my computer no longer works. I am fairly certain that the power supply is dead, but the rest of the computer is fine. The next day, I checked on craigslist for cheap computers, and someone had just posted one that he was offering for free. So I have a "new" old computer in my room. The person who happened to give the computer to me also uses linux. This is nice, since I know how to use the system, but it seems that there is either a problem with the ethernet card, either it was not set up correctly because he was using a modem connection, or because the western network requires me to use my universal account name as the hostname of my computer for the dhcp ethernet connection.
I also got two linux books free from the guy who gave me the computer. When my brother (who drove me to pick it up) asked the man why he was getting rid of this computer, he said that he had too many lying around. Which is both lame, and completely cool for me.
I also got a laptop over the break, from my sister in law. It's has a 266mhz pentium processsor, and 64mb of ram. It only has a modem. I installed Damn Small Linux on it, and it runs well. My sister in law said that it had problems with a short batter life before, and running it with linux (without reading and writing to the hard drive) it had a batter life of two hours.
Then the normal Restek labs got hit by a virus, so I have to use the main labs on campus to have any access to the internet.
On the work side of things, I have my new hours for my job, and I am now opening for ATUS (we check out media equipment, and handle troubleshooting with the classroom setups). We open at 7:30am. That means that I have to be up by 6:24, then get breakfast at 7:15, and only have until 7:22 to be out of the dining hall. I can get to work in seven minutes, if I am walking fast.
I am also taking 15 credits, Physics with calculus, multi-variable calculus, and intro to programming (for people who plan to major in programming, there is also a different programming class for certain science majors).
I actually have a bit lighter schedule than I had last year, but I might pick up some more hours at my job next week, since I only made about half of my works study money last quarter.
