CANON NOTES ON FYULONG (I MIGHT BE MISSING SOME, I'VE ONLY LOOKED AT KURURU'S PARTS AND THE ONES WITH BURUPYA'S MOM)
- While the babies are tiny, THEY GROW TO BE FUCKING HUGE; they also change drastically in shape.
- Travel in flocks? They don't usually show themselves in front of humans. Kururu and Mikage appear to be the rare exceptions.
- Called 'heaven's messengers,' said to be able to speak with humans. Set apart as sacred, almost mythical beasts.
- Covered in fur with feathered wings. Come in different colours! Breathe fire.
- "They're returning to their home in the distant north. In the winter, in order to raise their young they come south, and the young who are born go north. See, there's the young on the parent's neck, right? If they carelessly threaten us this ship will crash into them."
- Adult Fyulong have HUGE voices--when one roars at the ship it knocks everyone to the ground, and it also knocks out 'Cathy,' the flying beast that runs the ship.
- Adult Fyulong...either lose the ability to speak verbally or just no longer see the need to; they communicate telepathically.
- However, baby Fyulong like Burupya's siblings talk easily, though it's hard to tell if they understand what they're saying at that stage or just mimic the more complicated words.
- Burupya's mother can 'see' the darkness in Mikage's soul and Frau's; it's not said if she literally sees it or just senses it. She is also not afraid of it.
- In the Flower of Eden arc, Kururu demonstrates a similar ability, feeling deep unease over the forbidden incense. However, it's not a sure feeling, and she also doesn't react to Frau, implying that she can't 'see' to the same extent as Burupya's mother does.
- Fyulong very clearly understand the 07-Ghost spiritual cycle; Burupya's mother wants Teito to let him make his own choices in his current life, since Mikage's dreams were fulfilled by the Chief of Heaven. Her rationale is that while Burupya has Mikage's soul, 'Mikage' as the individual Teito knew has died to make way for a new and different life. However, Burupya chooses Teito in his new life too, and his mother accepts that. THEY'RE PRETTY ZEN.
- 'We have an ancient intelligence far from humans' reach. The young children are united in a group and learn.' Burupya is different from his Fyulong siblings, who are the same age as him, because he was stolen before he could begin that learning: while clearly intelligent, he can't fly or articulate himself like they already can.
- Burupya's mother has the power to show Teito the memory and image of Mikage's previous, human life.
EXTRAPOLATIONS/HEADCANON:
- While Fyulong can sense dark soul/magic shenanigans, the ability increases with age; Kururu cannot SEE THE MASSIVE DARKNESS IN YOUR HEART JUST BY LOOKING AT YOU but she may sense it and get shifty and uneasy.
- Baby Fyulong have no ability to communicate telepathically, but given the proper teaching they're very good at doing so verbally. They have trouble with certain sounds. Mikage has more trouble than most because he doesn't have a parent's guidance, but he can catch up eventually even without it, given enough coaching.
- It is possible there is a Fyulong line tied directly to the Barsburg royal family, and Kururu is more articulate/intelligent in part because she got that teaching.
- However, we also have to consider that Kururu is Ouka's age (15-16ish?) while Mikage is ... a year old? Less? It's also possible that like Mikage, Kururu was taken from a Fyulong flock as a baby--but then received years of training, which is why she can speak so precisely anyway.
- Kururu's colour might be unusual: she is the only dark-coloured Fyulong in the manga so far.
- Fyulong grow very very slowly compared to humans, and have much longer lives--Kururu is still barely bigger than Mikage despite the huge age difference, although she's much closer to an adult's body shape. She considers herself closer to an adolescent than anything.
- I want more canon.
