Where I want to be in a year....

So, next year I will hopefully abroad for the month of January, so here's my top three choices for classes:

1: COM 498 International Communication: British Mass Media
Professor William Lingle
Spend January immersed in British mass media and popular culture. Visit newspaper and magazine offices, television production centers, media-related museums and libraries and historical sites. Hear invited guests discuss radio, films and media issues. Trips outside of London (Oxford, Manchester, Edinburgh, York) and to major tourist sites. Understand British media systems by experiencing British culture.
*This is in Europe, with my major, with my faculty advisor, and Emily will be there at the same time! Con: I've talked to some of the girls on the floor and they all want to go to, but realistically I had to assume that pop culture class in London would be a popular choice. I just am crossing my fingers that my application stands out, and that they'll take into account the fact that it's my field of study, so I might get more out of it than some others. This being said, if all of my friends get in and I do to, that would be a blast!

2:ENG 398 Samuel Johnson and Eighteenth Century London
Professor Kenneth J. Ericksen
A study of Samuel Johnson's writings--novel, poetry, essays, dictionary--with visits to the various places associated with Johnson's life including the house in London where he lived while writing his dictionary of the English language, lunch at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, the oldest pub in London and where Johnson met with his friends to discuss literature and politics, St. Paul's Cathedral where a heroic statue of Johnson stands in the left Transept, the Tower of London with the Crown Jewels, the Monument remembering the Great Fire of 1666, etc. The class will also see modern London including the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Westminster Abbey, Harrods Department Store, the Eye of London. The course will be spending three weeks in London and one week touring the countryside in Stratford and near Lichfield, Johnson's birthplace. The class will be attending three plays as part of the course--two in London and one in Stratford.
*London, Emily, helps with my English minor, get to see plays!

3:REL/HST 298: Religions of Carthage and Rome
Professor Bill Millar and Professor Beverly Berg
This course focuses on religious continuity and change in Tunisia and Italy during antiquity and the early centuries of Christianity and Islam. The course begins in Carthage with its Canaanite divinities before the Roman conquest. In Tunisia, participants will see the remains of cities founded on Carthaginian soil with mixed Roman, Punic, and Berber populations where hybrid gods such as Saturn-Baal were worshiped. Following Augustine (4th century CE) the course will leave his native North Africa for Italy, and see Milan where Augustine converted to Christianity, Ostia where he discussed the life hereafter with his mother Monica, and Rome where he taught
rhetoric. The final week is spent in Rome to study sites ranging from the remains of the earliest temple to the goddess of Dawn to churches of the Renaissance. Throughout the course, discussion will focus on how Rome and Carthage were central to the spread of Christianity and Islam as these two major faiths competed for control of the Mediterranean.
*Okay, so my cousin spent Christmas in Tunisia and it wasn't her favorite place, but Rome and Milan would be amazing, and I've read about the history before, so I find it pretty interesting. History is my other minor, and Tunisia is where they freaking filmed Star Wars, how could you NOT want to go ;)!

Opinions? Money is a concern, because the airfare is paid, but then it's $4000 which will most likely be earned by yours truly this summer. It seems worth it though, right? Geez, I've been saying that I've wanted to do this for a while, but now that I have the application, I'm really excited. I really hope I get in (knock on wood), stay tuned!
