Buffy has a soft, almost baby faced look at times that suits her young age of 16. Her long dirty blonde hair hangs halfway down her back, framing a dainty face and sparkling hazel green eyes. Standing at a short 5’2” tall, she has a petite form that looks like you could break her in half by accidentally bumping into her. If you tried though, you’d find that looks are deceptive, as her slim form hides how extremely well muscled her entire body is. Due to her Slayer powers, she almost never scars, but there is an exception to every rule. Buffy has only one scar, an imprint on the right side of her neck where a vampire bit her and drained her of blood.
Her fashion sense doesn’t help perceptions either. Most of the time she wears whatever is trendiest. More recently she’s been into short skirts, knee high boots, cute trench coats, and midriff tops.
Since arriving in Template, Buffy has also discovered a strange
cross shaped mark on the back of her left shoulder.
Buffy has several facets to her personality, the primary ones being her persona as a Slayer vs. her everyday casual personality. When most meet Buffy, they see your average bubbly teenager who likes to hang out with her friends and gossip over pizza. She’s cheerful and optimistic as well as easy to approach for the most part. Her most pressing everyday concerns are often whether this top goes with those shoes and trying to figure out if she has time to hang at the Bronze with her friends after she’s done with her homework. Nothing too far out of the ordinary though.
That is, until you meet her in battle. Buffy is a born Slayer, which means that while she wasn’t trained to suppress her emotions or personal attachments, she can still switch to all business mode within a matter of seconds when she needs to. When the chips are down, Buffy is highly intelligent and is an almost natural strategist in battle. She’s quick on her feet mentally and can often come up with a fantastic plan on the fly. And, of course, she loves to throw quips at her opponent, being of the mind that throwing your enemy off balance is more than just a physical thing. Or perhaps she just thinks she’s funny. ^__^;;
Above all things though, Buffy values loyalty and honesty. Although Buffy was never separated from her family as the called Slayers before her were, she has the history of the Slayers etched into her mind. Her father made sure that she knew what the Slayers before her had been through in an effort to make sure that Buffy appreciated the freedoms she had as a born Slayer. Any who would dare to cross the people that Buffy cares for would have to answer to her wrath, and it would not be pretty.
As a born Slayer, and partially as the first born Slayer, Buffy has many advantages over not only regular humans, but her fellow Slayers as well. In the power structure of Slayers, a born Slayer is stronger than a called Slayer, and Buffy is the most powerful of the born Slayers. Her strength and speed is superhuman. She can withstand far more damage than a human and she can heal insanely fast. When she’s properly motivated, Buffy can lift several times her weight. She’s also one of the fastest humans on the planet, able to outrun most supernatural creatures and catch arrows in mid-flight. While her skin isn’t impervious to blades, she can and has taken heavy beatings with very little injuries to show, including falls from rooftops and being hit with cars. When she is hurt though, almost anything non-life threatening usually heals within 24 hours.
Buffy is also highly gifted in the art of precognition in the form of dreams, as well as having a powerful sixth sense of those around her. She can connect with other Slayers in dreams, but for the most part, her dreams are used to let her know of when danger is coming. For example, Buffy will often have troubled dreams of enemies to come before they arrive in Template. Her sixth sense is part of what gives her a leg up in battle. Through it she can often tell where her enemies and allies are around her without seeing them. The physical training that her father gave her helped to heighten this sense, as he would force her to fight blindfolded in order to make her use her sixth sense.
Lastly, Buffy has a natural talent with almost any weapon she picks up. In addition, she has trained extensively through her childhood with a variety of blades and it shows in her battle style. Sword, ax, scythe, mace all fit perfectly in with her fighting techniques, and can all be deadly in her hands.
Buffy’s most prominent weakness is probably her friends and family. Normally Buffy is cool headed in battle, almost enjoying her fights sometimes. She can handle any insults an enemy throws her face easily, letting them simply slide past her. If she feels that her loved ones are in danger though, her protective side will kick into gear, and she can get sloppy. All the training that she’s had ingrained into as she grew up will fly out the window, leaving her enemy facing a wrathful Slayer. While this means that Buffy hits harder, moves faster, and attacks without mercy, it also means that an intelligent opponent can take advantage of her anger to manipulate and defeat her.
Physically though, there’s not much that can phase Buffy. The only thing that’s ever been proven to work against a Slayer is a highly secret drug held by the Watcher’s Council. This drug was once used as a part of a test for the Slayer, before the Slayer line was opened and expanded. Her Watcher would give it to the unsuspecting Slayer on her seventeenth birthday and she would be stripped of her powers, weaker than most humans. Then the Watcher would trap her in a dangerous situation where she would have to fight her way out. If she survived, she was allowed to remain the Slayer and continue the battle against evil... If not, then the powers of the Slayer would move to the next girl to be called.
Although the drug in question has never been released or even made known to the public, it is a concoction of muscle relaxants and depressors. Buffy knows of its existence due to her father, Rupert, telling her about it and the test that surrounded it, but she has never been exposed to it.
"In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer."
That was once the one truth of the supernatural world. The Slayer was one girl chosen to inherit superhuman powers in order to secretly fight the evil that threatened the everyday life of the innocent. She was called into her powers around the age of puberty and fought until she died, when another would be called. The Slayer, as well as every girl born with the potential to become the Slayer, was guarded jealously by a circle of humans known as the Watcher’s Council. Each girl was taken from their family as a child and assigned a Watcher to guide them until they either passed the age of calling, or they became the next Slayer and died.
Then one day, the entire world changed. A powerful spell ripped through the world to counter the threat of an ancient evil trying to take over. That spell woke the sleeping powers in every single girl with the potential to become a Slayer, and forced the world to acknowledge the existence of the supernatural.
Buffy Anne was born to Joyce Reeve in Sunnydale, California. She was the first child ever to be born into the powers of a Slayer. She was the first Slayer born after the supernatural world was acknowledged by the public. As such, she earned herself a place within the rank of Slayers. She also made the headlines, since before her birth, no one had been sure what would happen to the Slayer line, whether or not it would still continue. A man named Rupert Giles was assigned to her at birth, to be her mentor and trainer as she grew up. In reality, Rupert fell in love with Joyce and married her before Buffy was old enough to talk. Since her birth father had been a one night stand, Rupert raised Buffy as his own daughter.
In a world where Slayers made up almost five percent of the female population, Buffy was able to lead a fairly normal life. While she trained tirelessly under her father to learn the trade of a Slayer, she also attended a regular school in Sunnydale. Her childhood was divided between her training and her school work, as well as spending time with the friends she had made. Buffy was given a gift that had never been bestowed upon the Slayers before her; the bonds of family and friends. Her two best friends were a boy and girl the same age as she, Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris.
If Willow and Xander were her best friends, then Faith Lehane and Dawn Summers were her sisters. Faith and Dawn were born slayers who lived in Sunnydale, and to Buffy, they were just as close as family. Faith and Dawn were two and three years younger than Buffy respectively, and both Slayers looked up to her as a big sister and mentor. Often the three would train together under Rupert’s direction, since he was the senior Watcher of Sunnydale, and just as often the two younger Slayers would hang out with Buffy, Willow and Xander.
Buffy was also in constant contact with several of the called Slayers as she grew up. Since she, Faith, and Dawn were all too young to take missions, a called Slayer was sent to Sunnydale every time the need arose. Kendra Young was Buffy’s favorite of the called Slayers, due to the fact that Kendra treated her like a younger sister. Kendra was one of the last called Slayers who had been raised by the Watcher’s Council, and whenever she was in town she would regale Buffy with stories of her adventures. She would also occasionally take Buffy with her on easy missions. So it was that when Buffy finally reached the age where she would begin missions, Kendra was chosen as her mentor.
Buffy was thirteen when the Watcher’s Council and the Initiative (a section of the American military that had been designated to help American Slayers and to deal with the supernatural threats) deigned her old enough to form a team and begin taking missions. Her first assignment was to form a permanent team that would help her to complete missions in the future. Naturally, Buffy chose her best friends to be her teammates, since Willow and Xander had not only grown up with her, but had also somewhat participated in her training in the past. The three were then charged to pick a codename for their team. Much to the chagrin of both Kendra and Rupert, they chose to name themselves ‘The Scooby Gang.’ Then, with everything set and ready to go, they were given their first mission.
An ancient vampire, old enough that his hands were actually cloven hooves, by the name of Kakistos had arrived at Sunnydale. He was intent on settling in and taking over a spot of power called the Hellmouth. The Hellmouth was a portal that, when opened, could connect to hell dimensions and grant power to the one who opened it as well as cause ultimate chaos. The Scooby Gang, under Rupert and Kendra’s direction, were charged with defeating Kakistos and protecting the Hellmouth. Kakistos was powerful because of his age and put up a vigorous resistance, but between both Slayers attacking in hand to hand combat, Xander attacking from a distance with a crossbow, and Willow attacking with fledgling magic, they slowly wore him down. Kendra and Buffy attacked as a unit and managed to stake Kakistos on a large beam of wood in the abandoned building he’d take up hiding in.
With the ancient vampire dead, the Scoobies were able to report their first mission a success. They returned to base, aka Buffy’s home, and celebrated. It was the start of a successful career for the Scoobies, as they liked to shorten their name. Kendra headed out when the celebration was over, but she still came by every once in awhile afterwards, sometimes to help with a mission, sometimes just to see her sister Slayers.
With their first mission completed, the Scooby Gang began to take regular missions, one or so a week, sometimes more depending on the demand. Occasionally Buffy would invite Faith to go on easy missions with the team so that the younger Slayer could get some much needed experience. It was on one such mission that the Scooby Gang encountered an unexpected threat; a group of vampires known as the Scourge of Europe.
The Scourge of Europe was made up of four vampires- Darla, Angelus, Drusilla, and Spike. Angelus, their leader, was set on ruling the Hellmouth as well as siring a new vampire. His target? The first born Slayer would be a perfect addition to his ranks, he believed. During that first encounter with the Scourge, Buffy was ready to let Angelus capture her in order to protect Willow, Xander, and Faith, but Kendra arrived in the nick of time, staking the eldest of the vampires, Darla, and driving away the Scourge for the time.
The Scoobies, Faith, and Kendra regrouped in the safety of the Giles house and began to research the Scourge, trying to discover a weakness they could use. Kendra explained to the team and Rupert that the Watcher’s Council had been warned that Angelus had set his sights on Buffy and they had sent Kendra to protect her. When Rupert realized that his Slayer and daughter was the target, he forbid her from leaving the safety of the house. Instead, Kendra would take point on the attack on the remaining three vampires, taking Willow, Xander, and Faith with her as back up. Rupert himself called upon his own powers of spell casting to put wards up around the house.
Buffy was furious with her father, and decided that when the team left, she would sneak out of the house on her own and follow after them. While the others prepared for the attack on the Scourge, she packed a weapons bag and perched in the window of her bedroom, ready to follow at a moment’s notice.
When the time for the attack came, Kendra, Faith, Willow, Xander, and Rupert set forth from the house wards to attack the Scourge- only to find that Angelus, Drusilla, and Spike were waiting for them. Angelus was furious at the loss of Darla and homed in on Kendra immediately. Buffy tried to get out to help, only to discover that the wards her father had put up to protect the house also kept her trapped inside. Horrified, she could only watch as her friends, sisters, and father were decimated.
While Angelus and Kendra fought fiercely, Drusilla and Spike faced off with the rest of the team. Willow, Xander, Faith, and Rupert were barely able to hold their own and could give no assistance to Kendra. Buffy, trapped in the wards of the house, threw herself against the magical barriers in a futile effort to help her mentor, but all she could do was cry as she watched Angelus literally rip Kendra’s heart, still beating, from her chest.
In the moment of Kendra’s death, Buffy felt her power swell within her. In a psychic vision that lasted but a fraction of a second in reality, Kendra spoke to Buffy. She told Buffy that she was proud of her for everything she had accomplished and would accomplish. Inferring that her own prophetic dreams had seen Buffy’s future, Kendra kissed Buffy’s forehead and asked her to never forget that she was a true leader for Slayers everywhere. Then she was gone and the vision was over. For a brief time, she was imbued with Kendra’s powers as well as her own. Buffy shattered the protective wards with sheer power, then attacked Angelus.
Buffy’s anger was beautiful and frightening to behold. Angelus didn’t stand a chance against this wrathful, doubly powered Slayer. Using the scythe that Kendra had dropped in her death, Buffy carved Angelus to bits, slicing pieces off little by little, steering clear of his head and heart. Drusilla and Spike fled in terror at the sight, and the Scooby Gang watched in horror. Angelus begged for first mercy, then for death, and Buffy finally beheaded him, watching blood soaked and panting as he burst into dust.
It took Buffy a long time to get over Kendra’s death and her own actions against Angelus. Kendra had been like an older sister to her and not only was it devastating to lose her, but Buffy blamed herself for Kendra’s death. What was harder though, was accepting the way Buffy herself had sadistically decimated Angelus. While the Scooby Gang continued to take missions, Buffy was withdrawn in school and stopped spending as much time with Faith and Dawn. Willow and Xander began to get worried for their friend and started planning a way to get her to act like herself again.
Two months after the incident, Willow and Xander took her on a surprise ‘mission’ that the Initiative had supposedly issued. Buffy went with them without question, too distracted to doubt their word. They led her to an abandoned crypt in one of Sunnydale’s cemeteries, then suddenly shut the doors behind Buffy, barring her inside. Faith and Dawn had been waiting for Buffy, and used the opportunity to try and get back in touch with Buffy. Trapped in the crypt for several hours with her sister Slayers, Faith and Dawn managed to help Buffy reconcile everything that had happened, convincing her that it wasn’t her fault and that Kendra would have been ashamed of how Buffy had let her training and missions lapse.
Life returned to normal after that for the Scooby Gang. Buffy slowly regained her zest for life and usual cheery-ness, and everyone settled in. Faith was finally given her own team and worked with the Scoobies often, and Dawn began to go along on the easy missions. Everything was looking up for the Sunnydale Slayers. That was, until about eight months later.
A prophecy was uncovered by the Initiative that an ancient vampire known only as ‘The Master’ would kill the first born Slayer on the eve of his 100 year long entrapment in a space-time force field beneath Sunnydale. It was an old prophecy that had been recorded decades before the expansion of the Slayer line, and therefore had been buried and forgotten due to the fact that Slayers weren’t born, but called. Fortunately, a researcher in the Initiative found in while working through boxes of old documents and brought it to the military’s attention mere days before it was to happen. A representative was dispatched to both the Watcher’s Council as well as to Rupert Giles to let them know of the prophecy and the danger.
Buffy was the only one home when the messenger arrived, the day before the prophecy was to occur. Thanking the messenger, she assured him that she would tell her father, then let him leave. As soon as he was gone, she threw the notice into the fireplace and began to prepare. She was afraid of what her father’s reaction would be, and she refused to let the events of the year before repeat themselves. Buffy spent her last evening with her mother and father acting as if nothing had changed. The next morning, she left the house early with the scythe Kendra had left behind, using the excuse that she was going to train.
Rupert received a phone call from the Watcher’s Council around noon, and was alarmed when they informed him of the prophecy. Immediately he gathered Willow, Xander, Faith’s team, and Dawn to tell them of what going on. Everyone split in a desperate search for Buffy, but it was as if she had completely disappeared. When night broke, vampires loyal to the Master, awaiting his return, attacked Sunnydale with an unequaled ferocity. The Slayers and others were forced to abandon the search for Buffy.
So it was that Buffy found her way to the Master’s prison alone. Using Kendra’s scythe, she attacked with all the strength, grace, and poise of her status as the first born Slayer. It was a fierce battle, the two combatants almost evenly matched. Sometime during the fight though, the Master managed to ensnare Buffy with his mind, putting her under his thrall. It was easy then to will her still, and he sank his fangs deep into her throat, drinking down her blood that would allow him to finally escape his prison. When he didn’t realize though, was that Buffy was stronger and more willful that he’d thought. She let him bite her, just so she could get close enough to kill him. It was to his surprise that as he drank from her neck, she brought up her scythe and beheaded up, killing him forever. Unfortunately though, he drank enough that she soon died of blood loss as she tried to return to Sunnydale’s surface.
