Yeah--the pacing is the one thing that I find really impressive about Sera's seasons (bless her, I love her, but). When I was first watching them, I definitely remember thinking, my god, the pacing. The emotional tenors an undercurrents through S6/7 are phenomenal, but the plot-level paaacing! But then you watch the episodes back to back and it's actually kind of great?? I have this (honestly, kind of bizarre) distaste for 7x23, and the only way I can watch it is if I gear up and start with at least 7x21, because then it's okay for me. XD Getting that macro feel for these particular seasons, and allowing yourself to really feel the season as a whole and catch all the little linkages and callbacks, is suuuuper helpful for me!
I remember first watching 7x21 with my father (whose name is Kevin, hee), and him being like, "huh, they kind of went the stereotypical route with this Kevin kid, didn't they?" and I was like...TBH SOMETIMES THE STEREOTYPES ARE TRUE. KEVIN'S HS/HWK EXPERIENCE WAS MY HIGH SCHOOL HWK EXPERIENCE. And also all my classmates'! Oh, Kevin. <33333 D;
Really, the serialized aspect of waiting a week between episodes--or months, sometimes--actually does a disservice in allowing details of the story arc to get lost. And the handicap of having multiple writers who each have their own interpretation of Sam and Dean...I am doing this intense rewatch to try and find those links that get lost in disjointed viewing. And I have to say, I found my mental image of season 7 to be a lot harsher than my rewatch determined.
I am hoping really, really hard that season 8 surprises me like that as well...
